Altura ArchitectsOur client has a large collection of bonsai trees and wanted an exhibition space for the extensive collection and a workshop to tend to the growing plants. Together we came up with a plan for a beautiful garden with plenty of space and a water feature. The design also included a Japanese-influenced pavilion in the middle of the garden. The pavilion is comprised of three separate rooms. The first room is features a tokonoma, a small recessed space to display art. The second, and largest room, provides an open area for display. The room can be accessed by large glass folding doors and has plenty of natural light filtering through the skylights above. The third room is a workspace with tool storage.

Design made Architectural Design StudioThis is a contemporary house design rooted in tradition, with elaborate pillars, decorative ceramic tiles, and a sloping roof with Mangalore tiles. The house is covered by a sloping roof, a distinct feature of Kerala architecture to protect the walls from extreme weather. Large courtyards, verandahs, and sit-outs bring the outside warmth into the spacious interiors. The entrance faces the green fields, unlike the customary practice of the verandah overlooking the road. Traditional timber furniture, translucent furnishings, and light-coloured clean walls bring attention to the flooring. The open ventilators on the top floor and wooden windows in this sloping roof home also help keep the house cool. The sunken floor space in the foyer and the use of natural stone and timber add to the traditional charm of the house. A contemporary house that seamlessly integrates peace and comfort into the busy lives of the occupants.

A small built-in cabinet houses the essentials for making tea, and two floating mahogany shelves hold a small tea pot and cups.
