Robinson Environmental DesignFor all of the perimeter plantings that this garden had when we first visited the site, it felt exposed with very little privacy. The existing outdoor spaces were virtually nonexistent and hence, went unused. The stairs from the house to the garden were rickety and unattractive doing nothing but transport guests from the inside to the out. As with all of my gardens, the operative goal was Sanctuary in all of it's forms. Creating the sacred from the secular, making the cold and uncomfortable into the warm and inviting. The lot on which this garden was built is one filled with sharp angles that go unnoticed on a conscious level but come into sharp focus when all of the layers are stripped away. My first and most obvious solution was to pour custom circular pads that transport the client and her friends from area to area as if one is jumping from lily pad to lily pad. Small enough in spaces to transport a guest from area to area, large enough to hold a car, the exposed aggregate pads blend in with the multicolored Del Rio pebbles used throughout the garden. A tropical extravaganza, this garden is now the epitome of seclusion and privacy right in the middle of Venice, California.

Sage Pools, Scapes & DesignWe designed & constructed a beautiful outdoor space for our client. The project features a custom pool with tiered spa, swim shelf with bubblers, water & fire features, fire pit, pergola built on site, covered patio with bathhouse & outdoor kitchen. The landscape features a blend of palms, Holly eagleston trees with sunshine ligustrum.

swelldoneAfter a lilac tree died and left a hole in the southwest corner of our back yard, we briefly entertained the idea of adding an expensive hot tub. After coming across this great clawfoot tub at a local salvage store for $100, I conceived this three-season bathhouse instead. A plumber installed a hot water bibb on the side of the house and a concealed, heavy duty hot water hose supplies water to the tub. A bamboo privacy screen can be lowered in the front and a vintage lye soap box is transformed into an ambient light fixture for atmospheric night soaking. Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design LLCA lush rooftop garden overlooking Boston’s historic Back Bay offers stunning views of the Prudential and John Hancock Tower. The character of the site is amplified by the dramatic contrast between architecture and sky. Mature magnolias underplanted with hostas form a threshold into the historic brownstone. Weathered-wood planting beds spill with new hardy shrubs, perennials, grasses, and herbs; a paper birch and a wind-sculpted spruce lend dramatic texture, structure, and scale to the space. Rugosa rose, juniper, lilac, peony, iris, perovskia, artemisia, nepeta, heuchera, sedum, and ornamental grasses survive year round and paint a brilliant summer-long display. A collection of new and antique containers dot the rooftop, and a terrific orchid collection rests beneath the birch tree during summer months.
