We were commissioned to transform a large run-down flat occupying the ground floor and basement of a grand house in Hampstead into a spectacular contemporary apartment. The property was originally built for a gentleman artist in the 1870s who installed various features including the gothic panelling and stained glass in the living room, acquired from a French church. Since its conversion into a boarding house soon after the First World War, and then flats in the 1960s, hardly any remedial work had been undertaken and the property was in a parlous state. Nous avons choisi de dessiner les bureaux à l’image du magazine Beaux-Arts : un support neutre sur une trame contemporaine, un espace modulable dont le contenu change mensuellement. Les cadres au mur sont des pages blanches dans lesquelles des œuvres peuvent prendre place. Pour les mettre en valeur, nous avons choisi un blanc chaud dans l’intégralité des bureaux, afin de créer un espace clair et lumineux. La rampe d’escalier devait contraster avec le chêne déjà présent au sol, que nous avons prolongé à la verticale sur les murs pour que le visiteur lève la tête et que sont regard soit attiré par les œuvres exposées. Une belle entrée, majestueuse, nous sommes dans le volume respirant de l’accueil. Nous sommes chez « Les Beaux-Arts Magazine ».

L’accent a été mis sur une recherche approfondie de matériaux, afin qu’aucun d’entre eux ne prenne le dessus sur l’autre. La montée d'escalier est traitée en bois, afin d'adoucir l'ambiance et de contraster avec le mur en béton. De nombreux rangements ont été dissimulés dans les murs afin de laisser les différentes zones dégagées et épurées

This extremely complex project was developed in close collaboration between architect and client and showcases unmatched views over the Fal Estuary and Carrick Roads. Addressing the challenges of replacing a small holiday-let bungalow on very steeply sloping ground, the new dwelling now presents a three-bedroom, permanent residence on multiple levels. The ground floor provides access to parking and garage space, a roof-top garden and the building entrance, from where internal stairs and a lift access the first and second floors. The design evolved to be sympathetic to the context of the site and uses stepped-back levels and broken roof forms to reduce the sense of scale and mass. Inherent site constraints informed both the design and construction process and included the retention of significant areas of mature and established planting. Landscaping was an integral part of the design and green roof technology has been utilised on both the upper floor barrel roof and above the garage.
