Meanwhile, at the other end of the budget spectrum, pullout systems integrated into a standard door cabinet can turn any underused space into a garbage pullout with room for multiple bins without a total renovation. Plus, for dexterous chefs, they can be pulled and pushed by foot to facilitate disposal even when hands are full.
Toe-Kick Vacuum When you think about kitchen design, you need to think about kitchen cleanup. A toe-kick vacuum is a design detail you’ll be grateful for every day. This feature can be added during the installation of a central vacuum system at a reasonable cost. With a slight touch of a foot switch, you can sweep crumbs into an opening where they’re sucked away to your vacuum system’s canister. Think of it as an automatic dustpan that’s barely noticeable and always out of the way.
Swap Bottom Cabinets for Drawers Base drawers another way to optimize your storage, Lennox says. “Drawers are so versatile and are almost always soft close these days. They’ll take a lot of weight — [more than 150 pounds] with some brands — so you can store everything from potatoes to entire dinner sets in them.”
Pantries are the best way to store canned goods, jars and bottles, as they keep everything in one organized space, says Simon Lennox of Adornas Kitchens & Interiors. Of course, not all of us have the luxury of being able to incorporate a huge pantry, but even a small one can be a real bonus. “A well-organized larder cupboard will add a lot of storage space to a kitchen without necessarily taking up [too much] space, as they can be made to any shape and size,”
Here’s some outside-the-box thinking: Not all of your lower cabinets must be the standard 24-inch depth. Most cabinet lines (even stock cabinets from big box stores) also come in a 12- or 15-inch depth usually used for upper cabinets. Using slimmer lower cabinets for one area has its advantages. It opens a bit more floor space
I cannot believe I still see designers putting dishwashers in the same old place! I have raised dishwashers up 12" - 18" up for the past 20 years. Who wants to almost kneel on the floor to get to your clean dishes and especially tall people or those in a wheelchair? Put a big drawer under the dishwasher and you got yourself a great combination.

i wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Ikea cabinetry. The have cabinets in 15", 18", 21", 24", 30" & 36" widths. There are lots of options for each cabinet - doors, 3 different depth of drawers, and they do have wood fronts available. All drawers are full extension, with soft close. I have deep drawers for dishes, pot and pan storage and the Blum hardware is top notch (they are a major good quality manufacturer in Europe.) In a couple of evenings my husband and I put all the cabinets together for our contractor, who took the fronts to be painted. If you have ever assembled anything from Target or Ikea, you know how easy it is. The first two we assembled took awhile, but after that we got much faster. I designed our kitchen with a ton of cabinetry and priced it out to a local shop, Home Depot and Ikea. Ikea was the least expensive with better quality, and their 20% off fall sale gave us a grand total of $3,800. Ikea's cabinets put $10 - 12K back into our pockets, and we spent that money on honed marble countertops, beautiful tile for the backsplash and both bathrooms, and glass shower doors for 2 bathrooms. When I want a change, I paint the cabinets, and I have a brand new kitchen. The ...
Our former kitchen had semi-custom kitchen cabinets with full extension drawers, a pull-out trash bin, and simple blind-corner solutions--all which I never ever fully appreciated until now. The 80's style kitchen we now have has dark blind corners, no dedicated trash area, and shallow, small 3/4 extension drawers. I curse myself for thinking we really wouldn't mind not having the extra 'bells and whistles' of our former kitchen (I'm not even going to go into our closet situation). Let's live in it a while and see how it goes, my husband said; after all, our very first house had none of these niceties. Bad idea. Those dark blind corners are a nightmare not only because the stuff is a pain to get to but they really are dark; they're deep and the stain inside them is dark -- I use a flashlight to see what's back there. And I must use that space because the kitchen is small and I can't sacrifice any storage space. The four (yes, four) kitchen drawers we have are shallow and small; their function would greatly improve if they opened fully. A large cabinet next to my stove where a double oven probably existed now houses five, 26" deep shelves. It would be a wonderful pantry and pot & pan...

I am a huge fan of IKEA's newest cabinet line. The soft-close full-extension drawers look very nice, and most of their drawer fronts are of good quality. We are going with the "Veddinge" door style - the painted finish seems like it would easier to repair scuff marks or dings, and the solid slab front will also be easier to customize (one cabinet will need to be trimmed down to the correct size. A huge benefit to their newest line is the modularity - the drawers and doors all come in 5" height increments, making it super easy to customize (you can even fit in an extra cutlery drawer + another under the toe kick if you raise the base cabinets 1"!) The only complaint I have is their cabinets are VERY heavy. Not a concern for the average consumer, but since we are building a Tiny House that is moveable, the added weight is a drawback. When I designed my kitchen, I chose 30" deep base cabinets and 15" deep uppers. I am so glad I did. There was virtually no extra labor cost and minor extra materials cost, but I gained 25% extra storage space! I have also enjoyed the extra depth of the countertops. If you have the room I highly recommend this customiz...

Cabinetmaker Stan Tucker of Tucker Cabinets has noticed that many of his clients are taking advantage of an extra 2 or 3 inches of space they find at the end of a cabinet run. They are turning those inches into a recess just deep enough for a mini landing zone, such as the set of hooks shown here.
Special Drawers A U-shaped drawer can be made to fit your sink, creating storage in the nooks on either side of the sink that would otherwise be wasted. Tip: If the drawer is wood-based, make sure the edges are kept as dry as possible (or sealed) to prevent water damage.

Pro: Like an integrated style, this setup lets you put the microwave at a convenient height (or in an underused cabinet to save space), at little cost. Cons: Neat freaks will be annoyed when others leave the door open or leave crumbs in the crannies. Also, opening the cabinet door might be a bothersome extra step for those who use the microwave very frequently.
Incorporate Open Shelving or not Only a nice fan on the wall over the range top Wall cabinets are practical for hiding away clutter, but if you want to add character to your kitchen, it’s worth incorporating some open shelves. They provide an opportunity to keep dishes handy and to display decor. The key is to choose attractive items to display and to ensure that you keep the surfaces neat. The storage jars on the top shelf add warm hues to this space and complement the pale blue bowls, cups and glasses below.
One note: The ceilings are 9' high, so I put in high, gorgeous, glossy, integrated reach-in pull cabinets. I love them. But I had noted in the IKEA showroom that they set these cabinets 18" above the counter, including over the (badly-situated) sink, so I did too, to maximize storage. I must report that this means I occasionally, gently bump my forehead into the cabinet door while I'm doing dishes. So it's not optimal, but in small kitchens, you get to enjoy the victories afforded by the compromises! Pas de sketch devant l'évier
Mix deep and standard upper cabinets. If you have some vertical space to work with, build your cabinets all the way up to the ceiling with a mix of standard 12- to 16-inch uppers above the counter and counter-depth uppers above those. This gives you breathing room around eye and elbow height, with some extra depth to stash large items or seasonal pieces. Just be sure to also include a step ladder tucked away nearby so you can get items down safely from the highest cabinets.Be aware that counter depth does not mean truly flush. Only fully integrated is flush and you will pay much, much more since those are made only by SubZero, Bosch, Gaggenau, etc. Counter depth is still an amazingly better look than those stick-out refrigerators.
Gathering items like a knife rack, a spoon bin, a mortar and pestle and a kitchen timer all on a tray or cutting board visually tricks our brain into seeing them as organized. It’s a quick trick that can make a big difference to your sense of visual organization.

10. Deep DrawersThis is nothing new, but that doesn’t keep it from being in my dream kitchen. Trading out the usual lower cabinets for deep drawers (one or two per traditional cabinet box) gives you easy reach-in access for anything from a large pot to stacks of dinnerware. To improve organization even further, drawer divider systems can break the interior into perfectly sized compartments so everything has its place. Plus, they can be adjusted later if needs change.Deep drawers are an affordable upgrade too, because many companies provide deeper drawer units at the same cost as a more typical three-drawer model.Be aware that counter depth does not mean truly flush. Buyers are on the lookout for rollout and quiet-close drawers," notes Gangi. "This is where that choice of midrange versus low-range cabinet quality becomes important. Spending the extra money it takes to get good-quality slide rails and quiet-close features will come back to you."
Kitchen island end. Two top drawers store napkins, place mats and other tableware close to a nearby bistro table. The bottom drawer stores a large stockpot that one of the homeowners wanted easy access to. “This tall stockpot was not going to fit in the pot-and-pan drawers to the left and right of the range,” Goldman says. “I need both of those drawer cabinets to be exactly the same dimensions to each other. Since she needed a particularly tall or deep bottom drawer, I suggested the end of the island, and tableware items in the two drawers above.”

Move the warming drawer up. There was a time when the warming drawer was routinely located beneath the double oven stack. In many ways this made functional sense, since it was near the ovens. But over time, many people ceased to use them since they were so low, making accessibility a challenge. These days it’s all about function. Place your warming drawer at counter level and close to your cooking appliance. Contemporary Kitchen by Barbra Bright Design
3. Get a larger hood. Consider an oversize hood, as shown in this photo. A larger hood accomplishes two things. First, it becomes an umbrella that can capture more grease and odor than one sized exactly to your range or cooktop. Second, it increases the distance between the cabinets next to it, visually creating more openness.
A tall, shallow cabinet to the left of the paneled refrigerator stores spices, cooking oils and calendars and a bulletin board on the door. The same wallpaper that’s on the ceiling above the island lines the back of this cabinet.

Baskets for potatoes and onions. If you have a walk-in pantry that stays cool and dark, this can be a great place to store potatoes, onions and other produce that doesn’t require refrigeration, such as apples and squash. Pick baskets that will allow air to flow around the produce, and store each type in its own basket. Onions and potatoes. You can store them close, just put the onion container on top of the potatoes. The onion gases go up and don't effect the potatoes.
That's an Over-Under Sub-Zero refrigerator from the Designer line. It would be called fully integrated if it had panels matching the cabinetry. Even with the stainless panels, it's only 24" deep, true counter depth. Someone trying to replicate this look and telling a designer or salesperson she wants a counter depth or "built-in" refrigerator will be surprised to find out it can stick out 2"+ from the counters. Only a few companies make very expensive integrated refrigerators (Sub-Zero, Gaggenau, Bosch, etc.)

Narum covered the pullout cutting board on this bay of cabinets (to the left of the refrigerator) with a stainless steel sheet so the homeowners can use it as a landing area for food just out of the oven. The distance from the oven to this countertop is just 60 inches, and when the landing board is pulled out the space shrinks to less than 4 feet. She added two rollout trays to the cabinet for ease of use.
