Principles of Design by Mariana Romero
This picture illustrates harmony-unity. All the parts of the room are related by one idea. The room looks like it was related to a lifeguard. There are colors that relate to a lifeguard like blue for water and red for the lifeguard pool floats. You can see that they have a wallpaper of the pool. The person that designed this room must be a lifeguard or loves lifeguards, all the parts were picked out according to the theme and were also picked out by the same material and style.
This picture illustrates rhythm-gradation. The suitcases have a gradual increase in size from top to bottom. The color of the suitcases also have a gradual increase and decrease from top to bottom. You can also see that the patterns of the suitcases are different. The mirror shows picture frames that reflects the other side of the room and you can see a gradual increase and decrease in the picture frames.
This picture that looks like the entrance of the house illustrates rhythm-transition. There are curved lines, the lines lead people eyes from one part to another. You can see in the angle that the picture was taken the hallway is curved and there is a part that has rug which is also curved. The steps are also curved, so mostly the whole entrance has an transition of curved lines.
This picture that looks like a pantry illustrates rhythm-opposition. The lines in the room are vertical and horizontal, the lines meet to make a right angle. Which is opposition since both lines met to make is a right angle. If you see one side of the pantry is vertical and not just the floor lines but also where they store there food. On the other side is horizontal with the storage also looking horizontal.
This picture illustrates rhythm-radiation. The things in the table are the central point from everything else. The room is round, the stuff in the table made everything else move outward. So the table is round and the chairs are placed around the table. So is the rug placed in the middle of the table, they also decided to place it in a round room making it look more a rhythm-radiation room.
This picture illustrates emphasis. Mostly everything in the living room has neutral colors but there is one thing that catches the viewer's attention, which is the orange chair. The chair is the focal point of the living room. So if you would walk in this room the first thing you would probably see is the orange chair. Its the only color that stands out from the living room.
In this picture it illustrates a asymmetrical balance. Like symmetrical balance both sides are balanced, but the difference is that they don't look identical. There is a long couch on one side but in the other there are two chairs that balance that long couch making it look asymmetrical. To the side of the long couch there is a plant, for the other side there is a like a vase and table that balance the plant.
This picture illustrates symmetrical balance. If you would cut the living room in half, both sides of the room would have the same thing. They both have the same couches and are the same color. They decided to put it close to the fireplace and TV, making it look symmetrical. It even has two windows on each side, so it's like looking through a mirror.
In this picture proportional and scale is being illustrated. The big chair is out of proportion and makes the breakfast area look out of proportion. They have a chair big, that looks like a regular chair that was expanded. The chair also makes the other chairs they decided to put in the breakfast area look small. The dimensions of the objects in the room makes it look out of scale, showing that the big blue chair makes a big impact in the room.
This picture illustrates harmony-variety. You can see the different colors like green, white, gray, and some tan color; they are all different but show a harmony of colors. The variety of textures, patterns, and materials they used also represent harmony-variety because they all have a common harmony. The sofas have the same texture and material but the table looks like it isn't the same material and texture, but the colors of the sofas and the table go together and gives it a harmony. They put the white pillows making it look good since the walls are white and it gives the room a little bit of brightness.
