built-in brainstorming (we need lower storage)...AS:I like how the shapes of the shelves are broken up, but I also like a more uniform library look. Maybe more of a library look since the bottom will be busier with drawers abs counters. But maybe the monotony is broken up by having a section where the book shelves extend floor to ceiling. SY: got it. It will be more affordable to build the uniform look.
$250. I have a great spot for a couple of great accent chairs in your loungey area (in addition to a sofa). I'd want to ask how they sit but I've just discovered and am falling in love with these. Equipal furniture is produced in Zacoalco De Torres, located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The furniture is composed of regional Rosewood and locally tanned leather. All materials used to produce Equipal furniture are 100% organic and entirely biodegradable. ...AS:I also love these chairs and discovered them last summer in San Miguel. They are, however, pretty uncomfortable. They sit very upright, good for dining chairs, but not sure they'd work for this. SY: of course you hang out in San Miguel. I'm dying to visit San Miguel. Too bad these are uncomfortable. :/
the wood with white top... and those are muuto dot hooks in the back :) ....AS: we have dot hooks in two other areas in the house which is both a case for more and for doing something else. I like the serenity in repetition. Part of me wants to steer away from wood in this area (except maybe on the ceiling or architectural accents) because we have so much darn wood throughout the house. SY: hm.... lots to think on. the ceiling wood extending to the outside is a good effect I propose we keep.
what kind of countertop/surface are you thinking around sink and on top of island? ....AS: this is gorgeous. I like the contrast of the black and the white cabinets, with the wood accents above and below. If I had my way our entire house would be grey concrete, wood accents, black, white, and green plants, which splashes of denim/indigo/blue like the sea. SY: I'm for that! Black countertops are not easy to clean. :(
not sure if black is the right answer, but maybe. but I do like the countertop/backsplash/sink area...AS: plywood would absorb all the paint and spills (which could be cool in a way, but not for me really). I think black would be too cave like for this space, though I've thought off and on about painting our dining room blackish (let me know your thoughts on that next time you are over). SY: I tend to love and got to bat for black. Especially with lots of wood and white and textiles.
cabinetry and sink with your art above... perhaps one tall storage cabinet...AS: I think I'd want to maximize that space for storage.
AS: very cool shelf.
AS: I love the muted natural tones. This is the image that has stuck with me the most. As to your questions related to how much storage, I'd say let's plan on one shelf, the entire width of the wall for books. The island could be all drawers for supply storage. SY: this is the bleached out wood effect you mention. I wonder if we mix bleached wood with warmer oak in the storage unit, tying to oak framed windows as you said. Are you still thinking just one shelf for books? We need to dig into that elevation.
I wonder how this could translate to your art sink/storage area...AS: maybe a little to raw. I like the previous image better. SY: got it. But stainless counters. They're a bit cold compared to what you've been describing you'd like.
layered rugs in the writing area..AS: I like it, I just worry about the foot feel/tripping. I feel like this is a look that might look best in photos and would be annoying in reality. SY: maybe. most kilim rugs are trippy whether they are layered or not.
layered rugs in the loungey/writing area
layered rugs with a round table and floor cushion in the loungey/writing area...
just thinking of minimal sink and storage... like back in this corner? AS: maybe too minimal. SY: yes, got that.
this is not in your budget... but it's beautiful :) . SY: this may well be more what you're describing for that back wall, though, right?
this feels lovely with the loungey area too...
lol this remarkably unused studio. HOWEVER, would track lighting be useful for you? maybe just over the studio area? It's a relatively low ceiling - you could direct where you needed it...AS: I think all over bright lighting (with dimmer) is better and I can use some clamp lights for extra lighting. SY: yes I saw that in your email, with track if you have wall painting space on the north end, right?
check out that storage in this studio! AS: so wonderful
a rolling cart would be useful, no? AS: Yes, we have a few so I think we are ok on that front.
muuto pendants...AS: I like, though I don't love them. SY: nixed!
muuto stacked boxes ...AS: cool. SY: yes, but I'm seeing where you're going with storage now and this obv isn't it :)
muuto pendants for over an island. AS: not so into the exposed bulb thing. SY: check
I adore Muuto. Modular shelving, island, chairs, lighting - all of it. Your thoughts? AS: I like these in grey, though wouldn't want to do the bright primary colors. I like things to be muted, natural, though not 80's beige if that makes sense. SY: it does!
you had one of these on your houzz board - still useful? AS: yes, but not essential and I wouldn't need so many. Maybe just one vertical row. SY: ok
from Jessica Helgerson, whom I adore: maybe some library/storage like this for your studio...AS: yes, I like this, but not the yellow. SY: right-o
trim/window framing (from AS' ideabook) AS: love it.
this kind of window framing would be gorgeous and tie to the wood trim elsewhere in the house. looks like it would push your budget, though. AS: love it.
is this kind of thing still something in your head/heart for inside and/or screen porch space? AS: nah.
hammocks and hammock chairs... still a good idea? and would you do them inside and/or out? As: nah.
this idea still rocks. AS: Maybe for screened in portion.
You saved this too: HISSMON/NIPEN Table, white, red - 120x60 cm - IKEA. Current thoughts? AS: over it.
you saved this before, AS. I assume for a writing table for you? This still what you are thinking in terms of size and style? AS; not so much.
from AS' ideabook. SY: let's definitely extend wood ceiling into finished area. again, not sure if you want big open access to screen porch? AS: I love the wood ceiling idea. I don't think we need to access the porch from the studio, though I do love the big windows for letting light in from the screened in porch and making the studio area feel more expansive. Maybe keep the porch access directly in front of the staircase, so one could go directly to the porch or turn right into the studio/playroom/lounge. SY: done
again from AS' ideabook. I like the windows, trim, and the feel of the furniture/decor, too. A, your thoughts? AS: yes.
from AS's ideabook. This would probably push the budget and I'm not sure you'd even want to open up the new studio to the screen porch this way? AS: more than we need.
