Bare vs runner on stairs
The radiator cover with its brass grille was made bespoke and painted the same pale grey as the walls. The staircase and front door (which looks quite pale in the light in this photo) are painted in dark green. Walls painted in Pigeon; staircase and front door painted in Studio Green, all Farrow & Ball.
Organise your paperwork Hallway If you often find leaflets, flyers and post drifting across tables and cluttering up kitchen worktops, this hallway idea could be the answer to your storage prayers. As well as designated sections for coats, shoes and bags, there are also eight slim nooks designed into the storage unit to clearly sort and manage ingoing and outgoing post. You could create something similar by subdividing an existing storage space, or a wall-mounted post rack would serve the same purpose if space is really tight.
Borrow light from an adjacent room I’ve already touched on this with the idea of an internal window, but for something less structural, use doors with clear or translucent glass between the hall and any adjacent rooms. This will allow natural light to flow through the whole of the ground floor. Single-panel glass doors work well in both period and contemporary homes. Again, opal or frosted glass will allow for privacy where appropriate.
