I live in partial earth home built into a small hill and it is awesome as far as heating and cooling all year long. The front faces south and we have huge windows in all the bedrooms and 2 sets of sliding glass doors to let in lots of light. There is a large overhang (south side) to block the intense sun in the summer but it still lets in plenty of sunlight in the winter. East and west side are both partially in ground and the north side is completely in the ground. Love the geothermal cooling in the summer (almost never run the A/C). We need to install some solar tubes on the north side (both bathrooms- office) as they are rather dark- that is the main drawback we have yet to deal with. I always feel very safe when there is talk of a tornado. The fellow who built the house back in 1980 also built 3 other earth homes in the area...he seemed to know how to build homes that were designed to conserve energy. We have never had any issue with water....all rain water drains away from the house. We also have many huge mature oak trees near the house that also provide lots of shade. At some point (mid 90's) they added a 3 car garage onto the north side.....so we walk down into our house from the garage. It's surely a different arrangement but we are used to it now.

Try Googling Coober Pedy in South Australia. Half of the population of this small mining town live completely underground due to the heat and there are bars, restaurants, even the church, underground.
