James Hutchison Garden Design

James transformed our overgrown soulless garden. He gave it structure, brought it to life and made it something we enjoy to look at every day. James was great to work with and the whole team worked professionally and efficiently to get the job done. Gardens are so important to get right and James's creativity and approach made the project easy and enjoyable. We are delighted with the result.

Our project was a small one for James and team, but it was beyond our capabilities so we contacted them and they said they could help us. We needed a patio extension, re-turfing an area of lawn and "re-modelling" around the greenhouse area. From consultation to completion, Guy and his team were fantastic. They used their initiative, suggested ideas we hadn't previously considered, delivered fantastic results and left the place immaculate. I really couldn't fault them at all and we are delighted with the work they did. We would have hesitation whatsoever in recommending James Hutchison Garden Design - it was a really positive experience.

First of all, I asked around my more demanding and perfectionist friends for a recommendation for some tricky landscaping, and the only name that was proffered without condition was that of James Hutchison. From the first contact, to their final return to check all OK, was most efficient and courteous. Every date and time was meticulously adhered, and regular telephone calls (even in the late evening and weekends) kept us fully advised of progress. And the job came in on time and on budget. Superb

We contacted James and Stuart early this year, to think about how we might redevelop the walled garden here in Kippen. Their ability to design well and suggest appropriate plants for the local conditions has been central to the great progress we have seen in the garden this year. We are looking forward to that progressing in the year to come

James and his team designed, landscaped and planted out our Edinburgh New Town garden. He listened to and discussed our requirements and produced a design that fitted in perfectly with the available space. We are totally satisfied with the end result and the professionalism and quality of the people who worked on the project.

We had a really big problem when an old retaining wall came down during a storm in our garden (2m x 20 m ish). We were just going to re-instate it but James and his team came in and created a tiered patio\dining and parking area. The implementation of this design and subsequent planting has transformed a dull and dysfunctional area of our property into a stunning, relaxing and functional area. The project has also resulted in far more light getting into the house. This was all done for a fraction of the cost of just rebuilding the original wall.

James and his team re-developed my garden in 2016, the process from start to finish was excellent, James spent time working out logistically and cosmetically what I wanted to achieve from the garden and then made recommendations on planting, garden flow and logistics. His team were professional and efficient. Of all the contractors that I worked with during the larger house re-development project, his team where some of the most polite, considerate and professional. The project took a number of weeks to complete and involved ground work, planting and paving, all of which was delivered to an excellent standard. I would highly recommend the James’s team and business overall and will continue to use him moving forward. 10/10

I have been lucky enough to work with James over the last fifteen years on various client projects. As an Interior designer we are continually asked to recommend a Garden Designer. I have never hesitated in recommending James. I'm now fortunate enough to have my own garden in Inverleith and very happy with all the work he has carried out for me. James and the team have created a very simple and low maintenance front garden which really compliments our new extension. Very happy with the design and also the common sense and practical approach taken by his team on site.

James completely redesigned our garden with a mix of hard landscaping and planting. We had no idea what we wanted and he took time to talk through his ideas and address any concerns that we raised. James oversaw the whole process and liaised with all the contractors involved. We were absolutely delighted with the end result and the planting has matured beautifully. Very happy clients.

Winter renovation gave spring garden. We contacted James late 2015 to discuss a redesign of a small difficult sloping garden in Edinburgh. James visited us several times to get our thoughts and in the process took meticulous measurements of the existing site. This resulted in a couple of options and after some discussion we agreed on a design. During this process James called on the assistance of Stuart for detailed planting advice and Guy for the landscaping/construction work. I believe that the contribution made by all 3 underpinned the success of the project. The real surprise was the start date of 4th January 2016. This was the key factor in delivering a transformed garden by the spring. The bulk of the work was completed in January, finished in February by Guy which allowed Stuart to plant in March and return again in May for the more tender plants. From an idea last October that we needed to do something with the garden, by getting the work done over the winter we have been able to enjoy a transformed outside area during the summer of 2016.

James has completed a series of new build landscaping designs for S1 Developments. Most notably Malta Terrace in stockbridge and the East and West House St Ford Elie. His designs are imaginative and well thought out but still practical to budget and the Scottish weather! James is very knowledgeable and can present his designs in a 3d format which helps visualisation. I have always found James very responsive and easy to contact.
