Space Group Architects are specialists in bringing a contemporary approach to new and historic buildings. An interest in the experimental and innovative is shared with the typical client and we understand the importance of working closely with both, other members of the design team, such as engineers, as well as the practicality of builders. With over 12 years in high quality architecture, outstanding interior design and considered restoration, we bring an expert eye to your project. We understand how crucial it is to preserve the character of historic and listed buildings, while incorporating a new life and function into the space. We have created more than 50 unique family homes. We typically carry a project from the brief through the Planning process, Building Control compliance, all the way through the construction until completion. Over all these years we have managed to maintain a Planning Approval track record of 97% approved applications. Our projects range from small (typically from £100k) to large (up to £5m). Our mission is to have a considered approach that encourages creative dialogue with both other design experts and the client. Our house needed complete refurbishment, which involved very significant structural repair as well as a small side extension. Space Group Architects (SGA) listened carefully to our priorities and produced designs for the airy, open feel that we were looking for. They were responsive to our feedback, and quickly produced new drawings if we asked for changes. This was important, because the structural work required that adjustments be made to the design during the implementation phase. SGA showed great flexibility in producing designs to address problems as they arose. We opted to have SGA manage the entire project, and are very glad that we did so. The contractors that they identified were extremely reliable, and they enjoyed a close working relationship that made for smooth progress. SGA also liaised on our behalf with the structural engineers, who needed to make repeat visits. We were delighted with the project at the finish. We have recommended SGA to others.

I engaged Martin and his team on a whole house renovation and extension on a Victorian terrace in East London. Martin and SGA did an exceptional job, and I couldn't be happier with the end result. The new room is full of light and has various clever design ideas given the constraints and the brief, including the different levels at the front and back of the house. It ties the front of the house and the garden together seamlessly, and I am only coming now to appreciate a number of the design features and attention to detail now the project is completed and I am living in the space. SGA was involved at each stage of the project - from the design through to construction and completion - with COVID intervening in the the meantime. Nothing was too much trouble and they offered advice, ideas, and input to guide the project through to a successful conclusion. As well as Martin, my thanks also to Charles Rocha for tirelessly addressing my queries along the way, and Judy Kohler for her input on designing a fantastic new kitchen space. Highly recommended.

Space Group Architects helped us deliver a truly exceptional home transformation. Martin and his team were the creative brains behind a ground floor extension that mixes old with new, lets in vast swathes of light through floor to ceiling windows and a full width glass ribbon, with great texture provided by a kitchen island of solid stone with rock-faced sides. The loft conversion certainly has the wow factor with a sumptuous ensuite bathroom and a glass box that houses the stairwell approach to a light, airy bedroom. Martin and his team were great to collaborate with as we exchanged ideas and suggestions, tweaking styles and lines as the project evolved and adding quirks such as a hidden tea station. The greatest compliment I can pay is that my wife and I frequently stare and marvel at our new house that Space Group has helped create.

We engaged Martin from SGA to resurrect a project that had been on hold for eighteen months due to prohibitive cost. Having reviewed the original plans, Martin came up with a series of options to deliver within a revised budget. Once engaged formally to take the project forward, I was impressed by the professionalism of SGA and their attention to detail. Material samples/colour schemes were worked through in the early stages so that the entire design was cohesive throughout All architects have to work to building standards, so for a given set of materials, one would imagine a building’s exterior to be broadly the same. Not so with SGA. Martin’s “out of the box” thinking with even the most basic construction materials (i.e. bricks!) has led to a finished product with an exclusive look. Internally, SGA’s innovative use of materials continued, and when combined with their nicely aligned design, has given us a very precise interior. Along the way I was often sceptical of Martin’s ideas and whether the finished product would look as good as he had promised. I’m pleased to see my cynicism was misplaced, and SGA have left us with a home we are proud of. Don & Siobhan

Martin Gruenanger is great to work with - creative, thorough, attentive to detail, extremely conscientious, reliable and quick to get back on any queries. He worked with us to renovate and remodel a Victorian house (including a loft conversion) and was very creative in integrating the Victorian design and features with the extension. His bathrooms are great - lots of complements on the gold grout he sourced! We would highly recommend Martin.

I worked with Martin on the renovation of a warehouse project in South east London. I met a number of architects on site before opting to go with Martin and space group and didn’t regret the decision. Martin came up with a number of innovative designs working around the planning and budget constraints that we were operating within. Martins project management skills allowed me to get involved only when necessary and his attention to detail was impressive throughout. I have worked with Martin and Space Group Architects for the last three years. We are group of surveyors he often instructs at the start of his projects to carry out as build surveys to record the buildings and site as they currently are. Martin is super organised and always gives very clear instructions and directions. I find that 80% of disagreements over contractual agreements on a building site come from poor descriptions of work. This has yet to happen with Martin, both client and I understand the agreements right from the start.

We approached five architects for our house renovation/extension (Edwardian house refurb with modern extension) but appointed Space Group because we liked Martin’s enthusiasm for the project and the house, as well as his early / initial ideas when on site. Once appointed Martin quickly understood our brief and came up with concepts which maximised and added to the floorspace in the house creating a series of stylish and functional spaces which work perfectly for our family. Martin is very easy to work with - meeting regularly, adapting designs to reflect our feedback and challenging us (not pushing!) to be daring in some of the details. He also worked very well with our builder, challenging them too when he felt something wasn’t right, and seeking to ensure the integrity of the design whilst being mindful of our budget. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Martin / Space Group - Martin is clearly extremely passionate about good architecture and design; and the evidence of that is clear to see in our finished home.

We are absolutely delighted with the work Space Group Architects did for us. They created a fabulous design that has not only transformed our penthouse apartment on the 9th and 10th floors, but also greatly enhanced the external building whilst being in-keeping with the overall design of the apartment block. It was a challenging conversion which also involved a good deal of negotiation with the freeholders representatives and residents association. Space Group’s technical support during these crucial early discussions was invaluable. I’m not sure the project would even have got off the ground without their input at those early stages. Once we had been given the green light to proceed, Space Group conducted a thorough tender process providing us with an excellent shortlist of potential contractors. We have also been delighted with the chosen builders. Once the build started Space Group's attention to detail and their management of the builders was second to none. We had total peace of mind during the entire build that we were in completely safe hands. We really cannot recommend Space Group highly enough. We wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again.

I initially thought employing an architect was a necessary part of the process of extending the house but expensive and probably not worth the money.I could not have been more wrong. Martin was fantastic from the first meeting to the last.He listened to what we wanted and created a architectural vision that was beautiful as well as practical and liveable in .We have 3 children and the space is functional as well as being visually stunning.The whole process was much more stress free than we had imagined because of Martin and his relationship with the building team. I could not recommended Martin and Space group highly enough.His attention to detail is impressive down to a storage solution for my husband's vinyl collections -which pleased us both!

We have worked with Martin from pre concept, design, planning permission, rejected planning, re application and to final approved planning. Through design discussions, budget negotiations, exciting news, bad news and a full range of emotions happy, sad, frustration and more. He was an incredible 'rock'. Firstly in terms of making our brief and what we wanted come to life on paper, to then helping push our thinking (it needed shaping and I am so glad he did). He has a great sense of style, incredible vision but also a true perspective for practicality and 'livability'. Yes, the project was over budget and took longer than we wanted. But we truely are super happy having now lived in our upgraded home for nearly six months now. I never worked with an architect before, but if I do in the future Martin and Space Group will be my first call. I share the budget comment and time, because we were always well informed and had an understanding of what was likely to happen next.

Space Group Architects undertook our major renovation project (The Old Spratts Factory), with outstanding results. Martin has a highly considered and efficient approach, as well as an eye for detail, which helped to transform our previously impractical warehouse conversion property, into a remarkable, yet truly family-friendly space. He listened to us, and collaborated with our ideas, was responsive, and exceedingly helpful throughout the entire project. With hindsight being 20x20- I can't imagine doing this project without Space Group Architects on board. We've created our "forever home" and Martin/Space Group Architects were indispensable to the process.

Martin transformed the basement of our home from a dark, cold and cramped kitchen/dining area to a spacious, warm and light space. His idea of adding a glass box to the rear of the house was the perfect solution and one that we had not thought possible. Martin also designed a mansard loft conversion and two bathrooms for us which drew on our family connection to Japan, which we are delighted with. Matin undertook all of the design, planning and tendering arrangements. We appreciated the time Martin spent with us to not only understand our requirements but also our design tastes. The design of the interior space was more detailed than we had originally expected and has ensured that on all levels of the house we have a consistent feel. Martin was always available and approachable for questions and we very much enjoyed our experience of working with him. We would highly recommend working with Space Group.

SGA provided me with designs, plans, specifications and Bills of Materials for our house upgrade project consisting of ground floor and top floor extensions . They effectively managed the contacts with all outside agencies to successfully secure planning permission in an conservation area. SGA then selected the contractor after evaluation of proposals and subsequently approved all progress payments and quality of work done by the Contractor. SGA's knowledge of the area was extremely beneficial in obtaining local planning approvals and they expeditiously managed all aspects of their work. SGA have a positive attitude and delivered exactly to our vision.

Martin was very caring and enthusiastic about our project. He gave us ideas we could not even imagined. From complete loft renervasion to the finer detail of mosaic tiling and clear glass design structures. Materials were suggested and agreed. He also took on board our tastes and together we worked out what was best for the project and my family. Martin also managed the whole project which gave me complete peace of mind. He also has a very good relationship with building contractors which helped with the project. My home is beautiful and has met our families need 100%. Thank you Martin and Space group Architects.
