Greater Los Angeles' Prominent Architectural Firm

Principals Peter Tolkin and Sarah Lorenzen—working under the moniker TOLO—guide the design of a variety of project types at various scales throughout Southern California. The firm’s portfolio of built projects includes single and multi-family housing, mixed-use and retail, restaurants and hotels, and arts-based projects such as gallery spaces and large-scale installations. TOLO is located in a large industrial warehouse the firm renovated at the nexus of the Arts District, Little Tokyo and Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. This space, which includes a fabrication shop, allows TOLO to test design ideas by means of prototypes and scale models. Since 2000, when Peter first founded the practice (Sarah joined in 2015), the firm’s projects have been frequently cited for their inventiveness and accomplished craftsmanship in design awards and in publications. TOLO’s designs draw from the rich material and cultural conditions that characterize the world we live in. As a collection, the work is idiosyncratic given that each design strives to respond to the particularities of place and that the firm’s clients are engaged as active participants. Rather than conceiving of TOLO’s architectural role as solely inventors of form, Sarah and Peter also see themselves as documentarians: interpreters of dynamic relationships and situations. Each project begins with an understanding of the project’s backstory. From here TOLO develops a broad design brief that incorporates client and site narratives, along with relevant material and aesthetic references (be they from the high arts or from popular culture). This method of working allows TOLO to combine an interest in form and geometry with a project’s contextual and cultural reality in an architecture that is representative of our complex lives. In 1998-99 I started working with Peter Tolkin on the design of my 400-square-foot back yard photography studio/gallery. The idea was to compliment the design of our 1912 Craftsman bungalow with something 'rustically modern' on the exterior and 'light and airy' on the interior. The resulting structure, a shed-like 'box' with 11-to-13 foot ceilings, north-facing clerestory windows, a sliding 'barn-door,' and an interior as luminous as the exterior was rustic, went above and beyond my imaginings. For twelve years this was the space where I shot, edited, displayed, visualized and escaped. Many friends, artists, and curators came through. While the studio inspired awe and conversation, it was understated enough so as to never overwhelm the work on display. Interior walls were 'floated' about 1/2 inch above the polished-concrete floor, there was a free-standing wall, anchored to a steel beam, that provided a more private space for storage and office-work, and the graduated ceiling accommodated a bank of both gallery and work lights. I thrived in this studio, and my work thrived. When we outgrew and decided to sell our house in 2012, this Tolkin-designed studio drew in just the right buyer. Needless to say, it broke my heart to have to leave it behind.

Peter Tolkin designed our contemporary poured concrete home in Malibu several years ago. We have been living in our house now for over 8 years. I continue to marvel at its exquisite design and timeless elegance. His choice of materials and attention to detail are perfection! When we first discussed the idea of a concrete house, I was a little nervous that it would be cold and look like a commercial building. He completely understood my concerns, and designed a home with many layers, textures and materials. He took the time to understand how we live and what was important to us. He collaborated and worked extremely well with everyone involved from the contractors to the designer. I highly recommend him. He is professional, talented and a pleasure to work with!

We have a mid-century one story home built in 1959. We hired TOLO Architecture to update the home. We worked with architect Peter Tolkin who transformed both the interior and exterior making it a fine example of contemporary design while being conscious of both budget and the integrity of the original design. Our living room, kitchen and dinning room were enlarged visually by exterior mounted "barn doors" which open the spaces to the outside, and by raising the exterior walkway elevation with wood decking to the level of the interior floor elevation. Peter's design added 5 feet to the master bedroom, designed a wall of built-in cabinetry of closets and drawers. The design placed barn doors on two adjacent corners of the room which transformed an ordinary bedroom into an extraordinary space which opens to the outside wood deck and pool beyond. He also resigned the circa 1959 "lava rock" free-form swimming pool. Peter used the pools existing footprint to create a new rectangular pool with spa which has a continuous spillway into the pool. It really is a water sculpture with sound! He secured our hillside with a 50' long horizontal white wall (5' tall) which not only keeps the landscape in place, but gives beautiful definition to the pool area. He designed a 400 sq ft pool house, perfect with shower right from pool. Barn doors at the corners makes the pool house an indoor/outdoor space. And last, but not least as the saying goes, Peter created an outdoor living room which steps down from the wood deck. It is complete with a cushion covered concrete banquette and a large fireplace within a concrete base. The house was featured in Pasadena Magazine (cover and inside) in an issue showcasing indoor/outdoor living. It was a pleasure working with TOLO Architecture!! They are creative, cost conscious, and responsive.
