We are designers that understand homes: how people use them, how they enjoy them, and how their lives are improved by great design. We also fully understand how to put them together to meet budget and design requirements. Specializing in residential projects allows us to deeply understand what our clients needs are. Architect Tom Vavra has more than 30 years of experience in home design and construction. From beginning as a carpenter during college, managing architectural design and development for a top national home builder, creating an award winning Architectural firm, and owning a custom home design/build firm completing 10 to 12 homes per year. Over the past couple of years, Tom has gone back into designing homes for others. These designs are produced for a number of individual clients, as well as some of the top custom home builders in the area. TVA has developed a great staff which offers an outstanding level of service and creativity, always stretching imaginations for each home design and turning client’s needs into spaces that are not only functional but also beautiful. Our exceptional staff includes architects, skilled draftsmen, a specialist in structural analysis and building codes, a graphic artist, and a business manager. Our experience finding house plans was a bit of a rollercoaster. We'd been jerked around and, to be honest, felt a little sick after paying a different architect for plans we didn't ask for. Then we happened upon TM VAVRA and they delivered. Every single person we spoke to was kind and patient, especially Tom. We only wish we had discovered their work much earlier on. Aside from that, the house plans available were all so great that it made it difficult to choose just one. Discussing modifications was simple and straightforward. I imagine doing custom work with them is probably very similar. Bottom line: we're VERY happy we went with them.

I was hooked up to TM Vavra through another firm. We found a very nice plan for a 4 bedroom modern farmhouse style that he had designed and built in the Richmond area several times- or variations of it. Would loved to have raised my daughters in a house like this! This is a spec house project. My wife and I bought a tear-down in Raleigh, NC. I partnered with a home builder/client to build this 3700 foot house in one of the best housing markets in the country. The lot was narrow and the plan had a side entry garage. I reached out to Tom and for a reasonable fee (and I mean really reasonable!) he reconfigured the garage, laundry (expanded), bedroom and bath to my interior designer wife's specs. The garage can now comfortably fit a Tahoe and Suburban! Tom is one of the most professional architects I have had the pleasure of working with. If you are looking for a high brow, condescending, "my way or the highway" kind of architect- looks elsewhere! This house will be about $1MM, but Tom's design will have it showing like a $2MM one! He is with you long after the check clears! Give him the opportunity to design your home!

It was a pleasure to work with Tom. My wife found a house of his on the East Coast and Tom customized the house for our use in Washington State. He was very responsive to our needs and concerns. As an out-of-state user we were concerned about the distance but communicating with Tom was very easy and straight-forward. Our building codes are slightly different and Tom was willing to work with us to accommodate these changes and provided options along the way! We had some changes we had to make at the last minute and he was very accommodating and easy to work with. We are eager to move in!

I could not be happier with the home that Tom created for us. He took his time meeting with us, I did not feel rushed at all. I went with three pages worth of requests hoping he could at least incorporate half of them into the house. Not only did he find a way to accommodate everything I asked for, he also included things I would have never even thought of but when I saw them I thought they were genius! (A pass through in the laundry room to the master closet!) He definitely creates homes with forethought and functionality.

I cannot say enough about our experience with Tom. Tom worked with us custom designed our dream home. We had lots of ideas in our head but Tom took the time to get to know our family and our needs and translate them into a beautiful and functional home for us. He was extremely responsive and understanding throughout the entire process. We were initially nervous about working with an architect and just thought it was going to be difficult. It was not at all! Tom and his team were patient and understanding and many times anticipated our needs before we realized them. I would recommend TM Vavra Associates to everyone!

We have been working with Tom on our plans for our new house that we are building with Perkinson Homes. Tom has been wonderful to work with! He listens and transfers all that he hears to paper, which is very impressive! He's extremely responsive when it comes to questions via email (thank goodness, because I love email!) and he is great at what he does. We are so happy with the outcome of our plans and the elevation of our home, and cannot wait to get started!
