Before sending old things to the landfill, get creative. Turn an old doorknob into a towel hook for your bathroom; broken floorboards can be used to build garden beds, old windows for garden sheds. Perhaps use a section of old skirting to build a coat rack for your hallway by sanding the skirting board, attaching some brass or cast iron hooks and screwing it to the wall. Reclaimed materials bring their own history and story to a project, something that new items from generic shops rarely do.
Plan a day away; get in the car with your newfound up-cycling skills and go search for those choice items at a salvage or reclamation yard, or even at a car boot sale. Don't go to one in the city, as items are likely to be three times the price, which means someone else will be making the cash you could be saving.
