Originally meant to be a basic renovation, the plan for this home makeover had taken on a life of its own by the time the brief reached Swati Seraan, founder and chief interior designer of By the riverside.
“The first phase of the renovation had overwhelmed the family and they unanimously decided to facelift the entire house. Their ask was simple – to create a modern and classic aesthetic that reflected the personalities of each family member,” says Seraan.

The media room is sectioned off from the living and dining areas by rose-pink French windows. To the right of the entrance, a white built-in television unit with decorative moulding dominates the wall.
A slim alcove within the unit serves as the bar. The wall opposite the French windows and next to the unit is clad in grey-and-white checquered wallpaper.
Seraan decided to integrate the utility area with the kitchen so as increase space. The result was an elongated galley layout. At the far end, a Victorian-style metal-framed window lets in natural light. Powder-blue cabinetry with classic moulding defines both sides of the chamber, while the floor takes on a vintage effect with stone-textured tiles.
The backsplash nods to the grey of the floor with monochrome mosaic tiles.
“The client’s love for yellow inspired the elegant Jodhpuri handles. The window grille detailing on the cabinet reflects the classic design scheme the clients were after,” says Seraan.

In the master bedroom, moulded teal cabinetry, heritage-print floor tiles and dull gold hardware conjure a postcard from the past. The wall opposite the bed features mirror-clad sliding-door wardrobes that serve to optically double the room’s volume.
A wood-and-wicker headboard backgrounds the bed, while a window to the right filters in plenty of natural light.

Oversized rustic tiles, a foliated wooden mirror and a distressed table-style vanity give the master bathroom a vintage spin.
“The client was keen to create a rustic aesthetic. This led us to customise the washbasin table in a unique, elegant way,” says Seraan.

The kids’ bedroom features walls with sage-green stripes. To the left of the door lies the bed, while sweeping green cabinets fill the wall to the right.
A corner window, underpinned by cosy floor cushions, highlights the wall intersection to the left.
