Kids' Bedrooms You Secretly Wish You Could Have
These kids' bedrooms are colourful, fun and guaranteed to evoke squeals excitement
With a new Disney princess to dream of every week, a new game to get addicted to on the iPad, and a host of incredible fantasy bedroom schemes created for their classmates at school (yes, Lion King bedroom, I’m talking to you), you’d forgive your kids for dreaming of the magical spaces below. The truth is though, although we’re not suggesting that you run out and order a bespoke Frozen palace for your 8-year-old daughter, some of these dream-worthy features can be created without breaking the bank. It just takes a walk in their shoes to get your imagination going.
Here are some nifty ideas that kids will love (and you might find yourself staring enviously at).

BUDGET OPTION: If building a bespoke treehouse in the bedroom isn’t an option, would putting up a tent do? This wigwam sure does create that hidden retreat they (and we) always dreamed of. Soften with cushions and hang homemade pompoms to ignite the fantasy.

Or can you make use of a sloped attic room to carve out a reading niche way up high?
BUDGET OPTION: The other option is to take this idea down to earth. Use aluminium chain screens or sheer curtains to demarcate the reading zone on a window seat and pile on the cushions.
The home stage
And the crowds go wild… Step up onto the stage to belt out your favourite numbers in front of a live show audience. Clever floating shelving in colourful shades house a host of dress-up paraphernalia in the ultimate playroom for a budding songstress.

BUDGET OPTION: Improvise. Make a corner stage out of plywood, hang up old curtains, grab a mike and set up a chair or two for the audience. Encourage an afternoon play, concert, dance party or puppet show with the help of an old shelving unit hacked into a dressing-up cupboard.
The fairyland
All we need is Snow White and the seven dwarfs.

BUDGET OPTION: If you don’t have spare tree branches lying around, set the scene with wall decals covered with magical leaves and branches, whimsical bedlinen and, of course, a must-have toadstool.
The magical escape
Am I the only one who would have eaten all my Brussels sprouts to have had a magical escape for Christmas? Like a treetop canopy under the stars, this bed is lit from above by little reading lights that help to create a super-cosy atmosphere and add a magical feel to the snug little hideaway.

BUDGET OPTION: Do you have a spare room or perhaps a nook under the stairs? String up some fairy lights, hang some sheer curtains, put a mattress down with plenty of cushions and call it ‘their secret place’.

BUDGET OPTION: It only takes a couple of low-hanging shelving units to mark out their play corner. Zone it out with decorative objects, such as bulbs and washi tape, as used here.
The princess bed
‘OMG!’ will be the phrase uttered when your daughter discovers this magical carriage. The only dilemma is when friends visit for a sleepover, who gets to sleep in the carriage? Let’s hope there’s room for all!

Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore… Perhaps that’s what you’re saying as you hand over the credit card at the bedding store. After all, your Disney-addicted daughter must have a dreamy princess room! This divine concept was designed by Sydney-based designer Robyn Hawke of Inspired Space. As she says, a young girl’s bedroom is the “centre of the universe, their own private kingdom where they can imagine and have creative play.” Hawke reveals her design tricks to create an ultimate princess bedroom:

As she says, a young girl’s bedroom is the “centre of the universe, their own private kingdom where they can imagine and have creative play.” Hawke reveals her design tricks to create an ultimate princess bedroom:
- White and pastels with accents of brighter colours work well. White walls also add a freshness and lightness to the room, which helps create the princess feel.
- The type and weight of the fabric used is very important – light and translucent help to create a regal ambience. The material needs to flow and drape easily.
The ultimate bunk bed

BUDGET OPTION: When two children are sharing a bed, privacy is gold. That’s why this built-in unit has introduced screens that double as a ‘meeting dome’ in the centre. Kids will have just as much fun climbing over it as they will under it.
CLOSE-UP: The unit shows how flexible the screening is – both kids can decide when they want to socialise and when they need privacy.
The ultimate sleepover space
Rather than unpacking sleeping bags and blowing up mattress, this oh-so-cool sleepover alcove is a fantasy come true. A vibrant colour palette (you can never have enough pink!), funky design and soft illumination come together to make this a dream sleepover space.
