Luxuriate in a Gentlemen's Club Look at Home
Rich colors, comfy furniture and cozy paneling make these masculine spaces inviting, but you can keep them as private as you please
Out of Africa with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford is my favorite movie. I've seen it at least 50 times over the past 25 years. The film is set in colonial Africa around 1915. I've studied each set design at length; I know the colors and textures of each scene as well as I know my own home. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Streep's character is invited into a "men only" room of the local social club. The room has beautiful wood details, white walls and taxidermy everywhere. Men lounge in the bar, drinking scotch and whiskey. Numerous tables and chairs serve as the gathering point for conversation and debate.
There are several things in my mind that make a room masculine: wood paneling, books, a fireplace and big leather chairs. Additionally, a masculine space has an air of privacy and simplicity. Take a look at these handsome spaces and see if they have you thinking of creating your own gentleman's retreat.

A cozy club chair by the fireplace with medium-tone wood paneling and bookshelves make this space perfectly masculine. Note the various combined textures, from the tree trunk end table to the gold leaf of the picture frame over the mantel.
Wall-mounted shelves create a library feel while leaving room to artfully display liquor bottles, art and accessories.
Although this bathroom is designed to be shared, it feels like a gentlemen's retreat with its caramel-color paneling, pewter bathtub and simple open windows that highlight the view.
I love the open shelving and seating arrangement of this office. The open shelves in stain-grade wood allow special items to be beautifully displayed.

A conversation-style seating arrangement has a masculine backdrop of books and a custom-crafted gun case. Note the strong black and white geometric pattern of the rug. When black is used in a floor covering it visually anchors the space while drawing the eye from the floor up to the ceiling.
This great space has the perfect leather Chesterfield sofa paired with a blue velvet club chair. The upholstered ottoman is perfect for putting up feet in front of the fire.
This is such an interesting, eclectic space. I love the use of gender-neutral red on the bookshelves as well as the layered rugs, including a splash of zebra. Overall the vibe is masculine and artsy.
A club chair facing the fire creates an inviting corner for reading or taking a snooze.

This great gentleman’s retreat features warm colors, paneled walls and leather chairs. A modern X-table with a glass top is a great complement for antique rugs, as it allows the full rug pattern and palette to be seen.
