Our clients and their three teenage kids had outgrown the footprint of their existing home and felt they needed some space to spread out. They came in with a couple of sets of drawings from different architects that were not quite what they were looking for, so we set out to really listen and try to provide a design that would meet their objectives given what the space could offer.
We started by agreeing that a bump out was the best way to go and then decided on the size and the floor plan locations of the mudroom, powder room and butler pantry which were all part of the project. We also planned for an eat-in banquette that is neatly tucked into the corner and surrounded by windows providing a lovely spot for daily meals.
The kitchen itself is L-shaped with the refrigerator and range along one wall, and the new sink along the exterior wall with a large window overlooking the backyard. A large island, with seating for five, houses a prep sink and microwave. A new opening space between the kitchen and dining room includes a butler pantry/bar in one section and a large kitchen pantry in the other. Through the door to the left of the main sink is access to the new mudroom and powder room and existing attached garage.
White inset cabinets, quartzite countertops, subway tile and nickel accents provide a traditional feel. The gray island is a needed contrast to the dark wood flooring. Last but not least, professional appliances provide the tools of the trade needed to make this one hardworking kitchen.

Nar Design GroupThis kitchen proves small East sac bungalows can have high function and all the storage of a larger kitchen. A large peninsula overlooks the dining and living room for an open concept. A lower countertop areas gives prep surface for baking and use of small appliances. Geometric hexite tiles by fireclay are finished with pale blue grout, which complements the upper cabinets. The same hexite pattern was recreated by a local artist on the refrigerator panes. A textured striped linen fabric by Ralph Lauren was selected for the interior clerestory windows of the wall cabinets.

Edmond Kitchen & Bath LLCThis creative transitional space was transformed from a very dated layout that did not function well for our homeowners - who enjoy cooking for both their family and friends. They found themselves cooking on a 30" by 36" tiny island in an area that had much more potential. A completely new floor plan was in order. An unnecessary hallway was removed to create additional space and a new traffic pattern. New doorways were created for access from the garage and to the laundry. Just a couple of highlights in this all Thermador appliance professional kitchen are the 10 ft island with two dishwashers (also note the heated tile area on the functional side of the island), double floor to ceiling pull-out pantries flanking the refrigerator, stylish soffited area at the range complete with burnished steel, niches and shelving for storage. HomeTech Renovations, Inc.A dynamic and multifaceted entertaining area, this kitchen is the center for family gatherings and its open floor plan is conducive to entertaining. The kitchen was designed to accomodate two cooks, and the small island is the perfect place for food preparation while family and guests interact with the host. The informal dining area was enlarged to create a functional eating area, and the space now incorporates a sliding French door that provides easy access to the new rear deck. Skylights that change color on demand to diminish strong, unwanted sunlight were also incorporated in the revamped dining area. A peninsula area located off of the main kitchen and dining room creates a great space for additional entertaining and storage.
Character cherry cabinetry, tiger wood hardwood flooring, and dry stack running bond slate backsplash make bold statements within the space. The island top is a 3" thick Brazilian cherry end grain top, and the brushed black ash granite countertops elsewhere in the kitchen create a beautiful contrast against the cabinetry. A buffet area was incorporated into the adjoining family room to create a flow from space to space and to provide additional storage and a dry bar. Here the character cherry was maintained in the center part of the cabinetry and is flanked by a knotty maple to add more visual interest. The center backsplash is an onyx slate set in a basketweave pattern which is juxtaposed by cherry bead board on either side.
The use of a variety of natural materials lends itself to the rustic style, while the cabinetry style, decorative light fixtures, and open layout provide the space with a contemporary twist. Here bold statements blend with subtle details to create a warm, welcoming, and eclectic space.
