Custom pergola and flagstone patio feature a custom-built "china cabinet" to create an outdoor living room. The cabinet - complete with bubble glass door inserts and soft close drawers - served as a potting shed. The wooden walls on either side are disguised storage closets that house gardening tools.

An under-utilised corner of the garden was transformed into a romantic apiary, or bee-yard, featuring brightly painted hives and vintage furniture. The pebbles are a practical surface for working on the hives and retain water for the plants. Plants selected are a mix of bee-friendly perennials, herbs and vegetables, including dahlia, salvia leucanthe, anenome japonica and dianthus, buckwheat, blue kale, rhubarb, and silver lemon thyme. Woolly thyme, festuca coxii and purple alyssum soften the pebbles. Photos by Dee McQuillan

The small backyard off the patio was carefully landscaped to include lush flowers and plants that can grow year-round. The cute playhouse with raised vegetable beds were a must for this owner, and our team was eager to make a custom nook for the children, all the while incorporating the small space and patio it includes.

This garden in Athens, GA needed a new lease of life. We re-designed and installed the backyard area, adding in the patio and pathway area to complement the existing structures. Shrubs and perennials were planted around to create a feeling of peaceful intimacy. Zoomworks

Rustic themed containers with annuals with variegated leaves or white flowers. Some containers were vintage ceramic pipes tied with burlap bows. The client painted garage window frames with a metallic copper.

Here is a good view of the entry to the garden. The antique door provides a solid privacy screen from the street beyond and an extra layer of security. The fountain splashes merrily to greet visitors who enter and this guard dog shows who runs this household! Blooming perennials such as Mexican marigold, lavender, sages, Santa Barbara Daisy, herbs create a joyous environment.

Aralia: Innovation in Landscape DesignAralia: Innovation in Landscape Design
his rural hertfordshire property plays host to a Grade II listed house and a separate period outbuilding which have both had various architectural additions over the century, resulting in the creation of a narrow, empty corridor; prompting the need for an external garden design. The challenge for Aralia in this herts garden design was to unify the two opposing buildings and overcome the difficulties posed by numerous access points, all in the space of a small courtyard of less than two hundred square meters. The clients request was to create a garden which blurred the strong geometry of the buildings through a curvilinear design, whilst incorporating multiple opportunities for seating to relax and unwind. The garden very much holds a traditional feel through the choice of materials and planting in order to be sympathetic towards the architecture, surrounding landscape and local aesthetic. Upon first entering the property, visitors are greeted by a pair of beautifully crafted Iroko gates, framed by two heritage brick planters which house a lush beech hedge, concealing elements of the journey ahead. Three sizes of autumnal riven sandstone are used to negotiate the curves and create a subtle flow and legibility to the journey, whilst naturalistic perennials and grasses soften the space and create narrative. Plants such as Astrantia, Perovskia, Deschampsia and Echinacea are used throughout the borders to create rhythm and repetition whilst green Oak arches frame snippets of these views, anchoring the path between the buildings as the garden progresses. The culmination of the garden is signified by a circular terrace which is controlled and held in place by the beautifully weathered curved oak seats, housing cut logs underneath to create pattern and shape. Two small water chutes bubble away in the background creating a relaxing atmosphere whilst the user can sit and take advantage of tranquil views across the rest of the garden.
A Down-Sized Dream Garden
A Down-Sized Dream Garden

Created for a couple moving to a smaller house and lot in order to “down¬-size” after their children had left home, this garden’s design presented many challenges. The wife, an ardent gardener, had a long wish list: a water feature; specific plants (including a river birch, a gingko tree, oakleaf hydrangeas, plants to attract butterflies, and trilliums), fragrance, a small patio, and a potting shed. She also wanted to eliminate grass from any part of the property, and to have space to plant annuals (in containers and other areas). In short, she wanted a small “dream garden” created from a site that even she characterized as “disastrous-looking” at the outset. The wife wanted pathways that would allow her to visit all parts of the garden. The patio space did not need to be sizable because of the high deck off the back of the house, but the views from the deck were important. We accomplished all of the clients' goals, and designed a series of small "garden rooms" in the backyard to create the illusion of a larger space. We also designed a "faux potting shed" front to screen the area under the deck and incorporated a raised planting bed for annuals and herbs, which was featured in an article in Fine Gardening the following year as an inventive way to disguise an eyesore in the landscape. This garden received an Award of Distinction in 2009 from the DC/MD/VA Landscape Contractors Association.
