Design Perspective Interior Design, LLCIn January of 2017, I decided to remodel the entire 1st floor of my own home. I love midcentury modern style and wanted to change our tract home to a style I loved.
We removed the 3 types of flooring we had (carpet, hardwood and vinyl) and installed Coretec LVT XL Metropolis Oak throughout the 1st floor.
We chose to save money in the kitchen and paint out maple cabinetry that had yellowed, to Sherwin Williams Pure White and update all of the knobs to bar pulls. Our Formica countertops also had to go, and we replaced them with Silestone Royal Reef quartz with a square edge detail. An Artisan 16 guage undermount rectangle sink was added to complete the modern look I wanted. We additionally changed out the light fixtures in the living and dining rooms, and installed a new gas cooktop.
Our existing fireplace mantle was large and very traditional - not the style we wanted so we removed it and the tile surround and hearth. It was replaced with stacked stone to the ceiling with a curly walnut floating mantle we found on Etsy.
We have a small 1/2 bath on the 1st floor and we changed out the lighting to LED bulbs, added a new midcentury mirror and installed Coretec LVT flooring to replace the vinyl flooring.
This project took a month to complete and we love the transformation. We no longer have a home that looks like our neighbors - on the inside!
To complete the remodel we purchased a midcentury modern sofa and dining set.
Elegant in DesignSometimes a project starts with a statement piece. The inspiration and centrepiece for this apartment was a pendant light sourced from France. The Vertigo Light is reminiscent of a ladies’ racing day hat, so the drama and glamour of a day at the races was the inspiration for all other design decisions. I used colour to create drama, with rich, deep hues offset with more neutral greys to add layers of interest and occasional moments of wow.
The floor – another bespoke element – combines functionality with visual appeal to meet the brief of having a sense of walking on clouds, while functionally disguising pet hair.
Storage was an essential part in this renovation and clever solutions were identified for each room. Apartment living always brings some storage constraints, so achieving space saving solutions with efficient design is key to success.
Rotating the kitchen achieved the open floor plan requested, and brought light and views into every room, opening the main living area to create a wonderful sense of space.
A juxtaposition of lineal design and organic shapes has resulted in a dramatic inner city apartment with a sense of warmth and homeliness that resonated with the clients.

La impresión dada por las grandes dimensiones del salón se potencia a través de la decoración. No hay mucho mobiliario y la atención solo se centra en un sofá, dos sillones y una mesa de café en el centro de la habitación.
Los cojines, las cortinas y la alfombra aportan mucha textura y calientan la habitación. Las paredes oscuras armonizan y revelan los colores de una colección ecléctica de objetos.
La tensión entre lo antiguo y lo nuevo, lo íntimo y lo grandioso.
Con la intención de exhibir antigüedades de calidad, hemos optado por agregar colores, texturas y capas de "pop" en todas las habitaciones del apartamento.

Mauk Cabinets by DesignA living room that received some wonderful updates. New built ins, flooring, and custom fireplace work has given this room a brighter and sleeker look. Using the clean lines of Marsh's Atlanta doors on the built in's help compliment the lines of the shiplap on the fireplace. The Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring in "Latte" compliments the color of the brick well while still keeping the space light and bright.
