Stone Standard The client provided a unique collection of framed images of Napoleon Bonaparte which were collected over several decades. The images are hung on a custom gallery rail system designed. Holes were drilled through the stems of Visual Comfort picture lights to allow the gallery rods to pass through the lights. This allowed centering of the picture lights to each rod. The bookcase lights are from the same series but they were modified to accept a one inch diameter custom rosette. The cabinet hardware, as with all of the metal finishes in the room, is polished nickel and includes Baldwin flush ring pulls, Von Morris mortise butt hinges and Brusso ball catches.
The beveled mirror and frame above the hearth is actually a Seura television mirror with Premier Glass. The television is completely undetectable when it is off and, when it is on, the picture is clear and bright. Undetectable behind the mirror is a Russound IR receiver that transfers IR signals to a cable box, DVD player, and Apple TV receiver located in the lower cabinets. The source components are connected to the television with HDMI cables. Bose wall-mounted speakers, positioned in the lower alcoves of the bookcase, are supplemented with a Sonos subwoofer placed under the sofa.
Surrounding the mantle and mirror is a three inch wide frame, identical to the frame around the gallery wall, that allows the Chesney's Edinburgh Carrara marble mantle and the steel Andover register grate to be set back from the bookcases. The mantle rests securely on a hearth stone of honed black granite which was recessed into the concrete floor. Suspended within the grate is an EcoSmart Bioethonal burner specifically designed for historic register grates. Volcanic stone was placed between the burner and the grate to conceal the front of the burner.
The bookcases, cabinets and wall paneling are fabricated from a combination of solid mahogany and mahogany plywood. Crown and base molding were eliminated from the design to minimize the impact of the library in an otherwise contemporary house. The fascia above the bookcases and mantle, as well as the fascia above the gallery wall, are single pieces of solid mahogany carefully shaved to follow the irregular contours of the drywall ceiling and eliminate the need for caulk or fillers. The same method was employed at the bottom rail of the face frame to allow it to follow the slight undulations of the concrete floor. Eloy Estrada built the wood components and installed them along with all of the other components in the room.
The two adjustable height Galerie des Lamps floor lamps on either side of the mantle are from the Grasshopper series. The Visual Comfort Dorchester Pharmacy floor lamps, on either side of the sofa, plug into a recessed Lew electrical floor box that was recessd into the floor under the sofa. The room originally had a chandelier and recessed lights all of which were all removed. The Lutron light switches, in matte Midnight, allow for independent dimming of the bookcase and picture lights. Within three of the bookcase alcoves are Littlight gooseneck lamps used to highlight various artifacts. The outlets for these lamps, and their transformers, are concealed under a removable wood panel at the back of the alcove. The cords for the display lamps cleanly pass through a Mockett grommet.
The layout of the room and gallery rail system were designed by Leland Stone.

L'espace était un long rectangle avec deux ouvertures, une depuis l'entrée et une depuis la cuisine. Ces ouvertures ont créé involontairement trois sections. La partie délicate du projet consistait à créer trois zones distinctes, chacune ayant sa propre fonctionnalité et son propre style, tout en faisant de la pièce un ensemble cohérent.
Nous avons choisi d'adopter une palette de couleurs vert foncé, inspirée des couleurs veloutées des années 1920, année d'origine de la maison. Les caractéristiques architecturales typiques du style "Craftsman", telles que les larges encadrements de fenêtres et de portes et les plinthes, ont été peintes en blanc pur pour créer un contraste saisissant avec le vert foncé.
La cliente souhaitait un espace créatif et éclectique, quelque chose de funky mais élégant... Nous avons donc opté pour une palette de couleurs comprenant le vert foncé, le noir, le blanc, la crème et l'or. Le style est éclectique, mêlant des pièces inspirées du milieu du siècle et du design MCM, quelques antiquités japonaises et chinoises, des éléments de décoration funky inspirés des années 70, des éléments de design Art Déco, ainsi que quelques pièces industrielles... Le résultat final est une pièce fabuleuse, amusante et funky, pleine de caractère et de clins d'œil au passé de la maison.
La pièce se compose d'une salle à manger, d'un salon/salle familiale et d'un “coin cocktail"...
La salle à manger est dotée d'un luminaire d'inspiration MCM "Sputnik", d'un tapis Johnathan Adler noir et blanc tourbillonnant, ainsi que d'un ensemble fabuleux de chaises à dossier échelle d'Arne Vodder, fabriquées en Suède dans les années 1960.
Le salon familial présente une immense cheminée en briques qui a été peinte en blanc, avec un écran de projection installé sous le manteau (une solution esthétique, plus élégante qu'une télévision placée au-dessus du manteau) ; un autre tapis Johnathan Adler, cette fois-ci avec un motif inspiré de l'Art déco ; ainsi qu'un grand canapé en cuir couleur cigare, qui contraste magnifiquement avec les murs verts foncés. Et si vous ne l'aviez pas déjà remarqué, la cliente était une grande amatrice de plantes, alors nous en avons mis partout !
Le troisième espace est le “coin cocktail", comme nous aimions l'appeler... Cet espace comprend de superbes chaises en cuir noir inspirées des années 60, un tapis tigre amusant, toujours signé Johnathan Adler, une magnifique table de thé antiquité et une lampe arquée. Cet espace cosy invite à déguster des cocktails !
La recherche de pièces pour ce projet a été sans aucun doute la partie la plus amusante, avec des éléments provenant du monde entier. L’espace offre également la possibilité d’évoluer, car la cliente est une collectionneuse passionnée d’antiquités et d’articles funky !

Ici le choix des couleurs est en lien avec l'histoire du lieu: une colline couverte de vignes qui aurait servi de cadre aux Rêveries d’un promeneur solitaire de Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Je mets toujours un point d’honneur à m’inscrire dans l’histoire du lieu en travaillant avec des matériaux authentiques, quelles que soient la nature et la taille du projet, privilégiant ainsi la convivialité et l’esthétisme.
Mark Brand ArchitectureFor a single woman working in downtown San Francisco, we were tasked with remodeling her 500 sq.ft. Victorian garden condo. We brought in more light by enlarging most of the openings to the rear and adding a sliding glass door in the kitchen. The kitchen features custom zebrawood cabinets, CaesarStone counters, stainless steel appliances and a large, deep square sink. The bathroom features a wall-hung Duravit vanity and toilet, recessed lighting, custom, built-in medicine cabinets and geometric glass tile. Wood tones in the kitchen and bath add a note of warmth to the clean modern lines. We designed a soft blue custom desk/tv unit and white bookshelves in the living room to make the most out of the space available. A modern JØTUL fireplace stove heats the space stylishly. We replaced all of the Victorian trim throughout with clean, modern trim and organized the ducts and pipes into soffits to create as orderly look as possible with the existing conditions.

Jack Trench Bespoke Kitchens & FurnitureWe worked closely with our client and their architect as part of a major refurbishment project on this Camden Mews house. On the first floor the architects transformed the space into an airy open plan living and dining area. The kitchen has been designed as a linear full-height elevation to really make the most of the original exposed beams and pitched roof. An integrated ladder in solid Walnut provides access to high-level storage.
