Table Lamp Rules?

8 år sedan
Can anyone clarify the rules?

Some say the bottom of the lamp shade should be at eye level when sitting.

Then others say the total combined height of the table and the table lamp should be 58" to 66".

If I go the 58" rule, the bottom of the shade will be WAY higher than eye level! With my sofa seat height of 16" anyway.

Thank you! I also read that you shouldn't be able to se the socket?

No socket in view. Your sofa is low. Standard is approximately 18". Have you considered floor lamps instead? Many are adjustable if you need reading light? Main goals with table lamps is limited eye glare when seated in room, don't want to see mechanisms, does it perform desired function either style and look or light function. Varies with every situation. Your table height is another variable.

End table height is 22." I have a 30" lamp and on that s table, you can see the socket and the bottom of the shade isn't at eye level.

So the 58" from floor to the top of the lamp clearly isn't going to work!

Floor lamps are s great option but then the entire room, with the exception of a small task lamp, on top of the piano would be floor lamps.

    Very small room!

Post photos of the room, and we could help you more. Right now just shooting in the dark.

OK, thanks. For the table on the end of sofa, I would measure and keep the top of a lamp under your picture. that's one of those room specific elements. Your end table is perfect height for arm of the sofa. Good job there. And your shade should sit around 4" from the edges to make sure you don't knock it when you go to use it. Some websites don't note the shade size which is very important. The overall height is important like for you I'm guess under 28" high, but your table is probably around 24" square so your shade should be around 15" round. Also, usually solid color lamps are better on glass table tops and glass globe types because they kind of disappear on glass. Hope that helps.

Here is one that has some personality, like your room. I like the black, slender shape and the up light should illuminate that black and white picture on the wall. The black repeats the other touches of black detail in your room. All factors. Pretty low price for unique lamp IF it isn't too tall. Because the shade is so narrow at the top you probably can get away with a bit more height, assuming you like that lamp or any 28" high lamp. I guessed at sizes so you will have to verify. ;)
