Tips on living room design

Hello! Recently bought a new house and looking for some help on designing the living room. It currently has a niche above the fireplace and TV, which I find to be quite outdated looking. Would you recommend sealing it off? Any suggestions on this and/or the rest of the space would be helpful. Thank you!

(This is the old owner's furniture / design set up. Currently it is a blank canvas open to any and all suggestions :) )

If the FP vents out the side, you might be able to center the FP on the wall. I'd consider eliminating all the various niches created on the wall.

Since the picture shows the previous owner's furniture we don't know what your style is. You can always paint or white wash the brick. Here are some pictures I have saved that show a fireplace and TV next to each other to give you some ideas. I wouldn't recommend shiplap unless this is a property on the water. Shiplap in a tract home is a trend that is over. But you can see that by closing up the openings in the wall and applying different types of molding and mantels you can get different looks.

jag har två barn som är tonåringar nu, en kille och en tjej - lite tomboyaktig och jag pratar utifrån mina erfarenheter från mina barn och deras kompisar och kompisars föräldrar. Barn växer snabbt ur teman med nallar, astrid lindgren, dinosaurier, hjärtan och riddare. Så tapeter med sånt är inte att rekommendera även om det är gulligt 1 år. Satsa hellre på tavlor som kan bytas ut. Tema natur är bra, tex blommor, strand osv. Det finns jättefina färgscheman för inredning på pinterest, tex dessa Bilderna är från pinterest / som är från http://design-seeds.com/home . Jag tycker att man inte ska vara rädd att ta i med färger, barn älskar färger, inte grått och beige och sånt och vi vuxna inreder för våra barns skull, inte för att hamna i inredningsreportage.

Hej! Nu är inlägget lite gammalt men är nyfiken hur det blev till slut? Jag tänker mig som skulle vara fint är ett runt äldre bord ( någon hade gett det tipset tidigare)mitt på golvet med en modernare matta eller modernare runt bord i vitt eller svart med en orientalisk matta och en lite iögonfallande kristallkrona. Under spegeln en längre bänk tror jag skulle vara mer harmoniskt, gärna en stoppad bänk i någon färg för att mjuka upp allt det vita....men du har nog hunnit inreda för länge sen, men vore kul och veta hur det blev?

Jag experimenterade nyligen med avtagbar tapet (ja det är rätt) för att uppdatera vår nedre lounge / entré. One thing that jumps out.. is the window… a need for shades that pull up from the bottom.. will allow light in while blocking only enough of the view to offer privacy as/when needed

You might consider drywalling over all of the niches, it definitely makes the space look dated. It might allow you more freedom to decorate the space how you want it as well once it is drywalled up.

Maybe look at drywalling over both niches, so that you have a flat surface to work with. There are many different ways you could look at redoing the fireplace wall so that it works for you. Below are some ideas from designs we have done for our clients:
