Urban Garden Designer London Josh Ward Garden Design Urban Garden Designer, Angel Islington, North London This North London Urban Garden Design was previously an overgrown, crazy paved 50s garden, with gnomes hidden under ivy clad walls, which needed a radical designer makeover to become a contemporary North London courtyard, with an onus on entertaining. Space was tight and so was the light, being a small and contained courtyard. In answer to this, I introduced an l-shaped raised bed with built-in balau cantilevered seats, which were under-lit, to offer more visual space, whist also acting as the main feature. A built-in 'fire-pit-cum-barbecue' added the extra wow factor for entertaining and keeping. I enhanced the low walls with bespoke, slatted trellis and a feature clad-slatted wall, by the French doors. The low maintenance, ecological planting was architectural, sculptural and bold, whilst also being mainly evergreen and texturally interesting. An understated row of Ornamental Pear trees sit in from of a freshly Dulux-painted boundary fence in Hawthorn, Melbourne. Galvanised steel trellis on timber posts provides height and drama to the garden space, allowing Star Jasmine to climb up the vertical garden and screen out the neighbours (adding privacy). A freshly positioned boulder retaining wall gives the space an organic feel. Invigorating grasses add a lush element to the back yard, colour matching the artificial grass. A poured-in-place patio allows the homeowner and her dogs to have a place to sit in the sun, while a dry stack wall delineates the patio edge. A full-scale makeover was necessary to address drainage issues and create a low-maintenance landscape. It also offered an opportunity to incorporate the homeowner's love of Japanese Zen gardens. We designed a contemplative space that melds the traditional Zen aesthetic with Northwest plants and materials. The back yard is a peaceful retreat with stone features and restrained planting. Stone steps lead to a lower gravel patio with Montana sandstone benches. Irregularly placed square pavers bridge the gap between the organic and the geometric.
