5. Raw Wood and Other Natural Materials Driftwood and weathered wood fencing populate most beaches, so it makes sense to introduce the material if you’re re-creating the style. A natural stone countertop, like the one seen here, is recommended, too. These offer the movement of nature, which help connect the space to a beach environment. “You can see that water made those lines in the stone,” Kolb says. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a man-made stone countertop in a vintage beach bathroom.”

Meanwhile, brass hardware and a hefty reclaimed-wood floating shelf add warmth, while marble-look quartz countertops and beveled white subway tiles with white grout deliver timeless yet of-the-moment style. The waterfall-edge island, the wood base and satin brass finish on the cabinet hardware also wowed users.

Adding square footage allowed the homeowners to fit in a vanity that packs more storage. While the overall color palette stayed generally the same, Henry added character by introducing brushed-nickel plumbing fixtures, brushed-brass cabinet hardware and a three-bulb brushed-nickel caged sconce light fixture. Swap out boring old knobs with these jute rope knots for a quick upgrade that can change the look of an entire room.

It’s not as showy as you think. There are some situations in which a larger dose can look fabulous — for example, the sofas shown here. For an on-trend look, search for an aged, antiqued or warm yellow gold that’s dull or matte in finish. Anything too bright, shiny or brassy will be hard to comfortably match with jewel tones like the ones in the photo. What about mixing and matching gold with other metallics, such as silver, copper, bronze or brass? Avoid it, but if you must, make one metal the dominant one and the others mere accents.

By the way, note that matte black’s ability to hide fingerprints is not only useful in wet spaces. As a finish for door handles and pulls, matte black stays beautiful through years of use, and it draws the eye to exactly where your hand needs to reach.

The pendant lights that Blankenship chose influenced the cabinet hardware choice. “Those light fixtures mix the metals: They have a gray concrete hood and then an antiqued brass piece,” he says. If a light fixture could mix metals (the gray looks silver), Blankenship figured that cabinet hardware could be mixed too. The perimeter cabinets have nickel hardware, while the island features antiqued bronze. “It makes the kitchen feel more custom and makes the island feel more like a piece of furniture to have separate hardware on it,” he says. The floors are oak and were refinished with a dark stain as part of the remodel.
