Svara på: Thank you all! You've convinced me we should replace our old jacuzzi with a soaking tub. I wish we could get one of those beautiful freestanding tubs, but it's for an alcove, and includes a shower, so I think our options are more limited. Still, the regular tub solves the problem of the ugly apron or expensive tile around the tub to hide the motor.

Svara på: People are actually moving away from these things due to the maintenance issues. Less manufacturers are making them now as a result. The problem is that when the plumbing in the unit fills with water and doesn't get used for a while, that water becomes stagnant and grows mold which then shoots out when you turn it on. Most of the user manuals for these things require that you do a very thorough cleaning every month which nobody is going to do. I personally have one in my home and I will be getting rid of it at the first opportunity.

Svara på: Nice tip thanks... I think over time, the traditional home jacuzzi will fade away out of production and be replaced with air tubs. The mold and build up is just too nasty and not healthy. Air tubs are just so much more sanitary. Most are programmed to run air through the system several times daily to keep the lines fresh. And you never get any water in the main pump lines either. They have their place in a pool environment were there is clorine in the system.

Svara på: The problem with Jacuzzis and why many people are removing them is that they don't get used often and the water that remains in the pipes gets moldy/slimy. Next time someone decides to use the jacuzzi, all that black gunk comes out in the jets. Pretty gross and you then have to clean the jacuzzi tub before you can actually take a bath. We never used ours enough and hated having to clean the gunk the few times we did want to use it. I removed our jacuzzi and replaced it with a free standing soaking tub ... which we also never use ... but it looks so much prettier and won't need to be cleaned the day that I do decide to take a bath!

Svara på: Lately I've seen more soakers and air jets and fewer Jacuzzi-style tubs. I have been looking at homes for about 2 years now and will build in the spring. I am just going to do the soaker because when I do take a bath I want the water to be deep. I have had two jetted tubs and both of them eventually leaked. I am done with them.

Svara på: cordovamom : My guess is that homes that are eliminating tubs generally are smaller rooms, and valued accordingly It may well be that small houses are eliminating tubs in the master, but in my area large houses are eliminating them too. I live in an area of large houses (3000 sq ft is small). The master not having a tub is not at all unusual. As long as there is a tub somewhere in the house for kids it does not hurt resale. Most houses in my area have at least four bathrooms, so not having a tub in every bathroom is not a problem. YMMV of course.

Svara på: I love tubs too, Cordova, and hated the house that had a shower only. I just prefer tubs without holes or jets, and I think most people who've had a jacuzzi would not choose another one if given their druthers. I love big soaking tubs where you're submerged up to your neck without your knees or toes showing; that's my dream :)

Svara på: Maybe it's a regional thing, but jetted tubs aren't out of favor in my price point and area. New construction in my area is still putting in a separate large jetted tub and large shower. The showers have become luxury showers, large, multiple shower heads, but the jetted tubs are still very popular and it would be odd to see a master suite without one in my area.

Svara på: Had giant jacuzzi tubs, HATED them. Because... 1. Used up the whole 40 gallon tank of hot water to fill it. 2. By the time it was filled I could have taken 3 showers. 3. By the time it fills up it's cold. 4. I have to sit in it to clean it. We're doing a MBR remodel soon and I have a 3x5 foot square deep soaking tub going in (no jets, no yucky tubes to clean, no electricity to deal with), and a *nice* frameless glass steam shower with a bench. That's where the true luxury is nowadays, I think. Usable luxury.
