gCreate a bathroom that fits everyone’s needs, no matter their ages or agility, with thoughtful layouts and smart options. Install a shower with a threshold of less than 3 inches, Bucher says, then add a bench or seat inside. Choose a toilet with a seat height 1½ to 2 inches higher than standard so it’s easier to stand up. Add grab bars that double as towel bars. Opt for digital tech features “that can increase safety and comfort,” Bucher says, such as a bidet toilet seat with remote control or a shower whose jets can be changed by pushing a button on the wall. Above all, “think about your bathroom as a cocoon,” Bucher says. “Use LED lights to follow your circadian rhythm, bring in natural accents, then light up candles and relax.”
Two main factors drove the design. wanted a shower that would be easy to use should they have any mobility problems in the future. Two, they wanted a space that was light and bright. “The best way to accomplish this was to remove the bulky tub and divider wall and add a larger glass shower stall kept the window size the same but replaced it with a window that has Craftsman-era mullions.

Look inside the shower and you discover a less subtle dark accent: a 7-foot, floor-to-ceiling installation of black subway tile. The shape of the tile illustrates the subtle touches that are the hallmark of Urrutia’s firm. “We didn’t use your standard subway tile,” Urrutia says. “Typically, this kind of tile is 3 by 6. The tile we chose measures 3 by 9. It’s our way of putting a small modern touch on classic design.”
