Deep over-fridge cabinet. Standard upper cabinets are 12 inches deep, and your builder’s standard cabinet for over the fridge may also be that depth. If you are able to upgrade to a deeper, 24-inch cabinet, it’s absolutely worth it. A deeper cabinet makes the fridge look more built-in, particularly if the fridge is counter-depth. It also gives you a deeper space for storage, avoiding the exposed, good-for-nothing area on the top of the fridge.

Double cutlery. For years I specified a single-layer cutlery holder for my clients. Now, I include a two-tiered insert to double their amount of cutlery storage.

Lack of trays. Not everyone needs an abundance of tray storage. For those clients, I will add a partition to the cabinet and adjustable shelves to the other side.

Q

Shelf above tray storage. Some clients don’t need tall tray storage because their trays aren’t that wide or they store them on their sides, as shown here.

the first shelf pulls out with the door and pulls the other one along behind it. This sort of unit can cost a bit more than others, but when square footage is precious, it can be worth it to be able to really use every inch of your cabinet space.

Q

advanced pullout systems use multiple rectangular shelves connected by a complex set of hinges and tracks, allowing for maximum shelf space and ease of reach.

Q

many modern systems allow for a fuller extension of the shelves, such as this example that allows the entire shelf to extend out of the cabinet (with each shelf moving individually so the bottom one isn’t covered by the top).

Another option is to put different types of waste into their own cabinets with appropriately sized bins so that you only have to open the relevant compartment at any particular time.

Countersink the screw. The cabinet next to a Lazy Susan cabinet with a bifold door often shows scratches over time. That’s because the head of the screw holding the Lazy Susan’s cabinet hardware in place protrudes and scrapes across the adjacent cabinet when the door is being closed.

Don’t crowd the hood. When using a chimney hood, always leave at least 2 to 3 inches between the hood and the wall cabinets to the left and right. Visually, the hood will not look cramped, and the sides of the cabinets will stay cleaner longer.

Get a larger hood. Consider an oversize hood, as shown in this photo. A larger hood accomplishes two things. First, it becomes an umbrella that can capture more grease and odor than one sized exactly to your range or cooktop. Second, it increases the distance between the cabinets next to it, visually creating more openness.

Get your microwave height right. Microwaves are often placed too high, and warming drawers too low. A maximum of 48 inches above the floor is an ideal height for a microwave for most people
