I had the pleasure of working with Rick when he purchased artwork from my gallery for a residential lobby project. He has a great eye and selected work with brilliant color, giving the lobby a chic and playful flair! I've also been lucky enough to visit his design studio in Hudson, NY where he stages contemporary artwork with beautiful mid century modern furniture that he refurbishes himself. His collection is always flawlessly presented with thoughtful intention. In an instant you can tell he takes true pride in his work. Rick is a visionary.

Rick appears to walk through a space with an immediate vision for what it can become—both aesthetically and functionally. When we bought our house, I thought it would suffice, but I didn’t love it. By the time Rick was through, I did (and still do). We did the work in three phases, over several years, and each time, Rick’s ideas resulted in cost effective improvements. His ideas for the house allowed each phase to build on the previous one and I still marvel at his insight in how to use space more effectively. I’m also impressed by his ability to mold his vision into what will work for a particular client’s budget, life style, and aesthetics. Here are just a few examples of how the transformation of the house developed. Rick did a walk through the house with us before we had closed on it to explore the possibilities. He quickly suggested changes in the way certain rooms could be used. The first was to switch the dining from a cramped uninviting space to a large room off the kitchen (at the time, a family room) and that alone resulted in a more inviting livable home that is great for entertaining. And, in fact, we started entertaining much more than we ever had before. Rick’s abilities are not limited to interiors; when we were ready to improve the outside of the house, he designed a cost-effective renovation of a screened in porch to create a new family room. Since the house didn’t have much of an outside entry, Rick created one by enlarging the flagstone landing, adding a simple portico and a new door that fit perfectly with the rest of the house. The combination of just these elements changed one’s impression of the house so much that people thought there had been an extensive addition to it. When we first thought about renovating our small kitchen, we were considering extending it but quickly realized that would have cost more than we wanted to spend. Rick created a kitchen within budget that is so useable and efficient—as well as stunning—that I cannot remember why we ever thought it needed to be larger. Our bright new kitchen is a delight to cook in. One of the things that I love is that several people can work together in it with ease, which has resulted in some very inspired dining.

His refined yet rich sense of design, his attention to detail, and demand of excellence made it a great experience to work with on all of his projects. Gillette is a visionary! Rick created a galley kitchen in my small Manhattan apartment that exceeded all expectations and preconceived notions of what I could expect from the space, with my particular budget. The use of his treasured resources and creativity enabled him to customize a uniquely charming expression of all I was hoping for and more. Attention to detail, budget and timetable were rigorous while his creative pursuit to maximize potential and perfectionism throughout the project never wavered. Our collaboration resulted in a kitchen that provided functionality, joy and my eternal gratitude.

The first time I walked into Rick Gillette's penthouse in downtown Manhattan back in the mid eighties I knew I was in a special place, designed not only for the pleasure of the beholder, but also for the comfort of simply being and living in what was really a [very] practical space. Rick seems to find, augment and create beauty whenever and wherever he sets his mind to it, whether his focus is a found object, a piece of furniture, a work of art in need of a frame, or an open, raw space ready for full renovation. As some one who's known Rick for almost 30 years, I've witnessed the process of numerous transformations that converted home and business interiors from uninspired to gorgeous and livable. Rick has an eye for things eclectic, modern, and an aesthetic that [in my opinion] looks tribal and primitive. I love it all. And Rick can design and create an environment incorporating all of these elements without the result looking or feeling weird and cluttered. Most importantly, Rick manages to create a feeling of openness, even in the most intimate of spaces where one can still spread out and feel at home, or entertain a houseful of guests.

What I enjoy about working with Rick Gillette is his ability to quickly grasp the size and scope of a project based on architecture and client requirements. Large scale renovations, minor architectural changes, or simply creating a furniture layout and color palette is equally exciting to him. When in Hudson, NY, I always visit FRG Objects & Design on Warren St. The space exhibits art along with on trend furniture and lighting pieces in a relaxed and open setting. The furniture is classic, comfortable and worthy of investment.

Francis "Rick" Gillette has got his finger on the pulse of design. He has reshaped the perception of past and current trends by infusing his projects with a vision of what will be. His attention to the most minute details allows us to breath a bit easier, when stepping back to take in the scope of his projects. Every element in one of his rooms, lobbies, or his Hudson, NY showroom has been carefully selected and in many cases hand crafted, to fit precisely. Rick's intuition drives his creative machine. He has transformed his Hudson, NY showroom @ FRG Objects and Design into an ethereal experience not to be missed. I have had the pleasure of working with Rick on several projects. His experience and foresight have transformed my craft, fostering a deeper desire to excel at my own craft. It's his total history that he brings with him, into every project. It's the history and experience of everyone he has worked with that accompanies him. He listens and he delivers. He exceeds expectations.

It is more than ten years, and I still often think back on the brilliant color palates Rick Gillette offered for me to select for my new living room; chartreuse, teal, taupe, and a few other colors I couldn't quite name. To this day, it is as fresh and dazzling as it was in 2003. Not only is Rick a supremely brilliant colorist, he understands and maximizes space. He is able to create spaces that appear larger, creates storage capabilities in places you could never have envisioned, and as an artist, he creates ways of showcasing the books and objects in one's personal art collection, and installs paintings in ways that are singularly unique. All adding to a heightened elegance and modernist glamour.
