We're glad you like it as much as we do! At first glance, most people tend to think we've used some sort of large format tile or natural stone. But, believe it or not, all of the decking you see here is colored concrete. From a design standpoint, the limitless choices of concrete colors allows us to play with and compliment other colors and finishes that are being used in the same space. As you can see, the Lueder Limestone coping and the concrete color of the decking really do a great job of complimenting one another. On top of that, we designed a custom scoring pattern for this client's decking layout, and then we had our concrete specialist cut the pattern right into the decking. It's the expert sawing/scoring that gives the decking the same orderly look that you would expect to get from using a patterned stone or tile. And the last thing we did to this concrete deck was to finish it with an acid wash. This process erodes a very thin layer off of the top of the concrete surface, giving it a slightly rougher feel, and a more varying color finish as well, which makes it feel slightly more warm and natural. Primarily though, the acid washing is used to greatly reduce the slickness that is typically inherent with having perfectly smooth concrete. Another process that can also be applied (which was not utilized here) is a process called "salt finishing". This process utilizes a specific kind of salt in the curing process that actually leaves varying holes and pores in the surface of the concrete. What you end up with is a concrete surface that looks almost identical to travertine. Please let us know if we can answer any other questions for you!
