I like the landing at the turn instead of the diagonal step we currently have. We've also considered putting carpet on the stairs that lead up from the main to the second floor and this is an interesting way of handling the turn with the carpet and the rails changing from one side to the other.

add "art" to the wall with reclaimed wood on a stairwell wall - the light fixture really stands out with the wood as an accent
