Cabinet design for the office Here, a blend of open and closed storage makes sorting office supplies a breeze. The shelves above the desk play with varying surface areas, so there’s room for almost everything. Ingenious storage hacks, such as a filing-cabinet drawer and pull-out baskets, help minimise clutter.
Lacquered look If you want to make a dramatic visual statement, take inspiration from this Mill Valley, California, home office. All the walls, doors, built-ins and even the ceiling are covered in the same bold lacquer paint. Lacquered surfaces reflect light, so even a deep blue colour doesn’t look too dark.
Glass-front cabinets While glass-front cabinets are most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, this handsome Moscow space shows that they can work just as well in a home office. Adding glass fronts to a bookcase helps reduce dust and can help preserve rare books, especially if the glass is coated with UV protection.
Inside, the office space is simple but not sparse, accommodating a comfortable workstation for one and storing Fein’s extensive library of architecture and design books. He designed the interior around his collection of George Nelson Omni shelving, accumulated over the years. The desk, which he designed, locks into the shelves. Seven-foot-tall walls house the bookcases and give the shed an intimate feel. “That was an attempt on my part to keep the scale down,” Fein says, to tie it in with the house and backyard. The room has a cork floor, laid on top of a slab-on-grade foundation. “We love cork floors, because they’re affordable, they wear well and you can put them on a slab,” Fein says.
