Limed timber stair treads on the staircase, and matching limed original timber floorboards weave together consistently through the spaces as if they had always been there. A book filled bookshelf is nestled between the studs of a wall supporting the staircase, and supposed by a delicately detailed balustrade over to allow the light through.

Wildco Construction Inc ...how the cables mounted to the posts? Wildco Construction Inc: google: top hat system. The steel railing is 3/16" stainless steel cable from Precision Cable in California. The end post is 3"x3" and the rest are 3/4"x3". The posts are mounted away from the wall on a custom steel bracket. The drywall conceals the wooden riser on the stair treads. The lower cubby is about 6ft wide by 1ft tall and the tall one is about 4ft tall and 16" wide. Teragren bamboo for the dark and rift cut oak for the lighter. Stairs from Teragren Bamboo plywood, custom made. The vertical posts are made from Ipe, finished with Bona, No stain.

This stair has a 7 1/2" riser and 11" tread, which is very comfortable. The angle of the photo probably makes the stair appear a bit more stretched out. One general rule of thumb for a comfortable stride is 2Riser + 1Tread = 25."
Minimal frills accentuate details- allow stairs to become free-standing sculptures with open treads. This suggests room definition, also open united floor plan. Through the ages: craftsperson shows skills. In midcentury modern, staircase showcases innovative new materials, rather than for traditional materials and craft. Simple steel beams now support the stairs, with fiberglass balustrades and aluminum fittings adapted from the aircraft industry. Simplicity of the design and the use of open risers keep the spaces flowing and visually appealing. While building codes have become more restrictive, you shouldn’t be dissuaded from rocking your inner Brady Bunch.
