This is pretty much what I had in mind but with some larger areas not all cubby-holes. This is probably about the same size as my closet

Or go with a total reworking of the space into a true hall linen closet/storage area. Expensive but adds an architectural element to the house
full extention drawers that are open to view (req. tidiness)
same doors as mine. divided into 3 even parts with shelves that are entirely open. not my first choice
central drawer/shelf space for medicine cabinet-type stuff. This is obviously a wider closet than mine
