“We contracted with Open Concept Home Design in 2012 to design and build a major addition to our modest 1400 sf bungalow. We met with five other design build companies in the area but were most impressed with OCHD. The design process was handled by Niels, the owner, and it was a fun collaborative process that resulted in a floor plan that met all of our wish list with a beautiful exterior that seemlessly integrated the existing structure. Our home was transformed from a cramped little house to a gracious living space with room to entertain large crowds, closets everywhere (!), a beautiful master bedroom and ensuite and a huge kitchen and adjacent dining area. The end result was everything we wanted and more, on time and on budget (they are known for tight cost control). The building process was extremely well executed with constant oversight by OCHD to ensure that no detail was overlooked. OCHD took care of everything, we only had to make the fun decisions like choosing finishes or paint colours, but even there we were given lots of suggestions when we couldn't decide or were suffering from "decision exhaustion". Yet if we wanted to make changes along the way, those were easily accommodated. If you are a homeowner contemplating a renovation or new build, you would do well to at least meet with OCHD for a free consult. Reasonable construction costs, excellent design sense, a great client-builder relationship, and most importantly a beautiful final product - your new home! “For a custom house on a narrow lot located in the emerging Ottawa urban village of Hintonburg, we wanted an architect 1. with an award winning portfolio of resolutely modern residences; 2. with designs demonstrating sensitivity to a site’s “sense of place;” 3. with tight urban infill experience; and with a solid record on cost control. Colizza Bruni Architects was selected because of a long record of strong house designs that included many delightfully expressive infill houses that have shown sensitivity for the Hintonburg’s historic, mixed-residential/light industrial character. The architects worked closely with us on the design; they responded with a powerful but cost effective exterior option (orange rusted steel) to our request for more colour; and provided unique designs for the kitchen, entrance bench/shelving, stairs, landscaping and a later added loft in the light tower, all of which give the house its own distinct character. They came up with various design solutions to maximize interior light despite the narrow site and to ensure visual connection with the lot's 60 ft spruce tree in the back yard The firm's fixed cost model based on decades of experience assisted in controlling costs.
