Do you upcycle?

Upcycling is a fantastic way to accessorise your home - not only is it a big money saver for anyone on a tight budget, but its a way of giving the past a new lease of life, and stamping your personality on your home.

So, do you upcycle? And if you do, what are some of your projects you've completed? Photos are always welcome!

I really should start, I'm just not crafty at all! I'm always amazed by everyone else's beautiful projects and get discouraged! I should probably start bookmarking some idea books for motivation

Definitely - try the ruler hanger above! I like the idea of using old vintage cans and turning them into pen and plant pots too.

Hej! I am Australian and live in Australia but have lived 7 years in Sweden. My written Swedish is rusty so I am going to write here in English in case you are interested in some more thoughts, although you have probably already written your article. I know more what lagom means than the average English speaker, but I certainly can't truly 'feel' it like a Swede who has grown up with it. For me it feels like how much Kalles I might put on my knackbrod, but I have lately started to try to think of it in terms of interiors and see if it works. The reason I am doing that is that I am currently working in the field of Professional Organising- helping people de-clutter, scale back, and organise. This process results in quite a makeover for a home and even life style and can be life changing. I personally LOVE minimalism and talk about it often but I find that the average person I meet is a bit cynical of minimalism and thinks it is too extreme. I have been reading a ton about minimalism and read some about hygge. I think what the average person is longing for is some minimalism+ some hygge. I think the current world (politics and fast pace of life , overdose of stuff, and overdose of info in our face all day on our screens, etc etc) feels a bit stressful for everyone these days. So, although the average person longs for simplicity, the word minimalism scares some people, and hygge is too cozy for some and so the concept and word LAGOM may be just the answer! The 'world' may start to borrow the word lagom from you Swedes now to fill a need for a word lacking in English that can fall between minimalism and cosy, that can feel relaxing, and which doesn't mean you have to get rid of as much as minimalism does. It may well gain a meaning outside of Sweden that is a different to inside Sweden I suppose. For example if the word became popular it could become a term for a 'style'. That would be pretty different to the meaning inside Sweden. I am actually planning to introduce the concept and word 'lagom' to my clients as way to encourage them to get rid of excess and have a calmer home, yet not be afraid as the goal does not have to be minimalism, it can be 'lagom' - just right, perfect, not too little, not too much. It sounds like a level or quantity they can choose themself as we go along. A bit like Marie Kondo's method; 'Choose to keep only what gives YOU joy and you will end up with just the right amount of stuff. It will be a result that fits YOU, not something you have to try to work to achieve, which I think Minimalism may feel to the average person. Shevaun Sandlund in West Australia.

Det är ju inte vi som fotar slutresultatet, det här är mer för att visa hur mkt både styling och en bra fotograf kan förvandla ett hem, med rätt verktyg så att säga. Men oavsett fotograf eller ljus så är det iaf skillnad, när det gäller att styla till en bredare målgrupp, optimera ytor osv, det tror jag du oxå ser.

My name is Andre Schievink and I run the design studio Amsterdam Living here in Stockholm. I have been working from my office for the last 12 years. With lots of fun and entousiasm. Now its time to move to a bigger location and share and combine our workspace with other creative designers/stylists/ artists/fashionistas and co interior designers. I am looking for a butik/ lokal on the groundfloor , in downtown Stockholm, with lots of windows and possibility for clients to walk in and see what we are doing or showing. For example if we are with 6 people, we need about 120-180 square meters lokal , with an est. rent of about 4000 kr. per person per month. I am a massive fan of upcycling, it's such a brilliant way to breath new life into an object and I also find it makes me look at the world differently. Things are rarely broken or useless for me, instead I see potential for a new design object that would bring quirkiness and curiosity into a home.

My favourite piece that I have done this with is my old ukulele, which tragically broke quite spectacularly last year. The bridge holding the strings splintered from the main body of the instrument and yet I still couldn't bare to part with it. It is now serving as a quirky coat hook in my bedroom, with the tuning pegs working perfectly with the loops on coats or jackets.

It's so easy to do and makes for an instant design success in any home! Jam jars are another one with endless possibilities - perhaps a small vase or new light fitting a garden could come it. Chipped a tea cup? Plant a flower in it and you've got yourself an Alice In Wonderland accessory in the works!

I have started with simple things like this and am now excited to take on a larger project. My parents have a set of old brown leather suitcases they no longer want, so I have set the cogs of my brain to work on them. At the moment I am thinking that the largest of the set would make for an amazing vinyl record display unit! I'm really excited to get to work on it when I return to England.

I am a big fan of upcycling as well, and I totally agree with Ben on the fact that any object can potentially become a great design object when upcycled. It's a creative and truly rewarding way of giving new life to objects we do not want to get rid of. Besides, DIY is an ever-growing trend, and DIY & lifestyle blogs where you can get inspired are numerous, so why not give it a try?

Personally, I have recently upcycled a very old and broken large wooden frame. I have fixed it and painted it vinyl white. Then, I have hung it on the wall and I use it to frame my to-do lists above my desk. The result conveys a mix of vintage and modern style which I love.
I also like to upcycle milk glass bottles and transform them into vases. I have a dozen of them on the window sill of my kitchen!

Most importantly, what is great with upcycling objects is that it's cheap, easy, and fun.

Love your Yardstick organiser.

I too am a in love with up-cycling old furniture - in particular chairs. Found this old chair in a second hand shop and decided to decoupage in Japanese Washi papers. Then had some fabric printed from the Washi designs and made a tie on cushion for comfort.

Amazing what you can do with something that would otherwise have probably been sent to the tip!
