Me and my girlfriend have just got our new house, previous owner has decked the whole garden and we need some help to make it more green?
Any help would be much appreciated.

There are also some excellent artificial lawns available, if you covered an area you really would be hard pushed to notice.James thanked alant1000James

We had been thinking of artificial lawns, are they of a good quality these days?alant1000

Go to ebay and type luxury artificial lawn and you'll be surprised.Stella Michael

Consider how you would use the artificial lawn, for example I tend to walk barefoot most of the time whatever the weather and prefer a natural feel beneath my feet so would prefer wood to fake grass but if you almost always wear shoes it may be ok. I stayed somewhere once carpeted in astroturf and although fine for a few days wouldn't want to walk on it all the time.Barton Fields Patio & Landscape Centre
9 år sedanHi James. Check out Verde Turf, we have supplied this for a few years now and is a very good quality artificial turf. (There are now many cheap imports on the market)
Personally, I find decking extremely slippy and quite dangerous especially during winter months. Strongly consider removing some of it (or you can now purchase anti-slip strips although they are quite expensive) I had a similar scenario last year when I moved house, all the back garden was decked and my little boy kept slipping over so it all came up and was paved. I know this is expensive to do but you could just take up a section nearest the house.
All the best, Dan @ Barton FieldsJames

9 år sedanIt looks like a big deck so you need to be bold to really transform it. Use large rectangular planters to create rooms in the garden. Place them so that you cant see to the end of the garden but it looks like a path you would want to travel down. By using large planters you can put in large plants like small silver birch trees or japanese acers. If you feel really bold paint the fences black, they will recede from view and make the space feel wider. Check, the location of the joists for weight bearing potential.James

Cut some part of the deck so you let space to it for growin.
In the other hand you have this plants that grow on the walls - so it would look nice at least one wall completly green + a tree + huge basket with flowers. Some table with at least 4 chairs and a huge umbrella in case of hot sun.

Large bold planters could be introduced down one side see www.designscapeuk.com for an interesting range of styles and colours. Combined with LED spotlights retro fitted into the surface in an interesting pattern this would start to develop the space.
There is also the possibility to create planting holes within the deck into which trees could be set - probably on a simple grid and uplit.
Above all keep it simple and the space will become interesting and designed.christa1990
9 år sedanMaybe paint the actual decking, there are lovely colours out there as this decking and shed area looks a bit boring.
You could put large planters on the decking and plants such as honeysuckle, jasmin etc that can grow up trellis attached tto the fence, provides colour and a fab smell when you have your conservatory doors open.
Add solar lights to the pots, you can get ones that change colour and look realy pretty, don't need to go mad with them, also another lovely feature would be a water feature. These come in all shapes and sizes and again the sound in summer is lovely.James
Författare9 år sedanwe were thinking to tan the decking but figured this would mostly wash away?! thanks everyone for the suggestions by the way didn't expect such great responses to this!richardedd
9 år sedanWe had a similar issue when we moved in to our house, we didn't have the money to remove it and I was not up for trying to do that myself, so I advertised it on freecycle and our local small adds as 'free decking' with the condition that whoever wanted it had to remove it! I had a ridiculous ammount of interest and in the end had to choose who would have it and ended up with a local builder coming and taking it away! It took him and two others half a day and then we put grass seed downJames
