Does doing white shaker style cabinets in your kitchen mean you have to go with a modern design?

    No, shaker is quite transitional.

    No. The Shakers were a religious sect who modeled their life with simplicity and austerity which translated in every part of their life including woodworking. Shaker cabinets lack ornamentation but that does not imply modernism.

    I agree with the comment made by miacometlady...however, they are very popular. I would say that from a trend perspective they are contemporary.
