You would need to post a drawing showing windows and doors and dimensions to each window and door. Also, what is the ceiling height?

Nine foot high ceiling is standard for the home. I am wondering whether I should go 10 ft. I need help in deciding whether to do a U shaped kitchen or a L shaped, whether to put the island going east west or north south, whether to put the sink in the island or against the back wall. I need a large pantry and plenty of counter and cabinet space. I need ideas on height of windows in the kitchen and dinette area. Please share a clever and charming lay out

U-shaped kitchens provides you with the most counterspace. A higher ceiling height will increase heating costs if you live in an area that gets cold in the winter.

We would still need to see a floor plan in order to know how the kitchen relates tot he rest of the house's design.

Here are some layouts we've done in the past. Depending on the placement of your windows, doors and openings, you can build-out the cabinets/island to maximize the use of space but still have a pleasant open layout. If you can post a picture of the open space, we can give you some more ideas.

I like a very bright and cheerful kitchen. What is the best place for the placement of the window. What should the size of that window be?

We would like to help you, but the information you have given us is too sketchy. It is a good start. A picture of the rest of your house and where north is gives us much information to work with. Much more than words and very quickly. The answers to your questions must be given in the context of the rest of your home. If you don't have a drawing and you are trying to design your house around the kitchen, that is not typically how a kitchen designer works. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that is not 'normal' for us. Is this a new house that you are building or are you remodeling a house? Are you trying to figure out the kitchen first so you can build the house around it?

So it appears that the windows are yet to be determined. What kind of a climate do you live in? If you live in a warm climate, tall ceilings will be beneficial. If you live in a cold climate it will cost more to heat.

Are the kitchen and nook both 12x15 totaling together 24x15? Or are they 12x15 combined? The answer to that would help to determine where to put the elements you are asking about.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I like tall ceilings, but want to be reasonable to create the charm and wow and keep others factors in mind. The Kitchen and nook is a total of 24 ft wide and 15 ft deep. I also want to design a stunning kitchen

Is that a large archway or framed opening between the nook and the great room?

Here on Houzz many share their thoughts and the results you settle on can be stunning.

I will share your other concerns in your e-mail here for others to consider.

"Need ideas for a stunning and useful kitchen with counter tops, cabinets, stunning island, window, ideas for ceiling height and ideas for ceiling height for the great room and dinette and foyer

Need better ideas for design of the master suite. Do not want closets inside the bath area. What is the best place for the placement of the stairs going to the basement. I would prefer it to be near the laundry/garage area.

Please share your thoughts. Thanks "

I have not yet decided what the opening should be like between the great room and dining area and between the great room and foyer area. Any good ideas will be highly appreciated

Ceiling Height: Since you live in a cold climate, I would suggest that you stick with 9’ ceilings instead of 10’. The higher ceiling would be mean more heating cost. Also, I think that 10’ would be disproportionate to the size of the rooms.

Flooring: Also, because you live in a cold climate, I would definitely go with radiant heat flooring. Perhaps a flooring specialist or architect will chime in here on that issue.

Shape: For a 12’ wide kitchen you should stick with an L shape with an island or U shape without an island.
You could make this feel larger by putting a bay window with seating as in the second picture below.

Countertops: Granite is very popular now and probably will be for a very long time because it is a natural material. It is more porous than quartz and requires sealing. Some say once a year but really it depends on the granite because they have different porosities. Granite has more movement (wavy lines) in it than quartz but makers of quartz countertops are coming out with more and more natural looking stones. If you want lots of light and bright I would go with a very light stone, as in the photo below posted by Shiela Rich Interiors. If you type in granite or quartz and click on products you will be able to scroll through and see different ones. Keep in mind though, that with a natural product like granite, every slab is different. The best way to get what you want is to go to the manufacturer and pick out the actual slab you want.

Backsplashes: In the photo below the backsplash is the same material as the countertop. I feel this kitchen is an excellent choice for doing that because as different materials are introduced, the kitchen will look smaller an

Closet in the Bathroom: Having a linen closet in the bathroom is a good selling feature. If it’s too large, you could make it smaller. Maybe a tall 18” cabinet.

It seems that the 5x9 closet should open to the smaller bedroom; otherwise you will not be able to list that as a bedroom when you sell the house. In order to be listed as a bedroom it must have a closet.

I am not able to read the measurement on the great room. It looks like 19x18 but it lines up with the kitchen and nook so it should either be 19x 12 or it should be drawn larger.

What don’t you like about the master ‘suite’? Is it a suite connected to the smaller room to the east?

I would recommend moving the doorway in the kitchen further east so that it isn’t opposite the bathroom door. That would be an unpleasant view.

Do the stairs go to a cellar and upstairs? Or only a cellar? Or only an upstairs? They do seem awkward right there. Perhaps they could be turned on one end. (The higher the ceiling, the more length the stairs will need to go upstairs). If they only go to the cellar, could they be put in the garage and make the garage 3 1/2' larger to accommodate them?

So you can visualize the WIDTH of the kitchen, I have posted the second picture. This kitchen is approximately 12’ wide.

Here is a link so you can scroll through some kitchens with white cabinets. Perhaps you will see something there that you like. Each picture has credits to the designer, architect, etc. so you can contact them for assistance. https://www.houzz.com/photos/white-laundry-room-cabinets-phbr0lbl-bl~l_63071

Great room is 19 ft wide and 15 ft deep. Kitchen is 12 ft wide and 15 ft deep, dining area is 12 ft wide and 15 ft deep. The stair well goes to the basement. There is no upstairs. The entrance to the basement is from the foyer side. The master bedroom has two closets, one bath. Do white or cream colored cabinets brighten the kitchen. Would you recommend arches or square for openings in the great room and dining area

I see only one full bath for four bedrooms, plus a powder room. This ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms would be quite unusual in the US for new construction. Perhaps an architect would be useful at this point.

Yes, light colors will brighten the kitchen.

Whether you go with arches or square opening is a matter of taste but should flow with the rest of the house. If you want it to look very modern or a craftsmen era look, I would use a square opening.
Arches are beautiful but I wouldn't use them with sleek, glossy, Italian cabinetry. Browse through some of the rooms here on Houzz. Don't study them, just do a quick browse. When you find two or three that you like. Post them here so others can see your style. A designer will be able to pick out the elements that make up that style. (Copy the URL and paste it in your comments and the picture will appear).

It would be good if an architect could advise you on size of windows, since roof lines and exterior symmetry play a part in size and placement of windows, however a kitchen designer's input can also be very valuable in the kitchen area. Part of the decisions regarding windows are of course a budget concern. The more windows you have the greater the cost.

Very good point apple_pie_order. If the room to the right of the bedroom is not part of a master bedroom suite and it can not be a bedroom because there is no closet, then it might be a good idea to ask an architect about using the 5x11 closet in master bedroom as a bathroom and make the current bathroom into the community bathroom. Then at least you would have two.

The stairs are still a sticky issue as well. That would be another good thing to address with an architect.

The room marked B in the master bedroom is the master bath. The plan has two bedrooms and a master bedroom. The master bedroom has two closets and a master bath. Please give ideas of where the basement steps going down should be placed
