What type of wood is used on the outside of the home?

I would like to use this type of wood. How often would it need to be maintained? Yearly?

    The siding on this house is clear vertical grain western red cedar. In this climate, I would suggest maintaining it every couple years, but I often see people go a lot longer without maintenance.
