Recessed area in photo?

Could you please tell me the purpose of the recessed area in the left of the photo. Are the cabinets functional are just painted on for continuity?

    The cabinets are fully functional and actually hiding a TV in the middle section. The kitchen could not be continued all the way because of the window.
