Undermount sink selection dilemma

Hi everyone,

We are building new house and wanted to have same size, double, scratch-resistant undermount sink in steel or satin finish.

Please suggest some brands and options. I am thinking of Blanco...

if you want undermount you need to have stone benchtops. Cant have undermount with Laminex. Have you looked at the black granite - they are alot more pleasing to the eye, dont show up very little bit of dirt or grease and are reasonably priced if you shop around

I looked at undermount - there are several brands including IKEA and those found at Bunnings, as well as in specialist shops. I found the square basins a right nuisance to clean, so I've ensured our new basins are slightly curved which fits saucepans and plates better than square ones. I decided against undermount not because of look, but because I needed to optimise height for 6'4" husband and every inch counted. Blanco, Clark and Abey all make suitable versions and there are others.

I have the Blanco Clarion sink with drainer tray. I had it overmounted and I absolutely love it! I’ve had this sink for 2.5 years now. It’s so easy to wipe down and keep clean. No mouldy edges because it is so flush against my wooden bench top. I am renovating my kitchen later this year. I plan to keep my Blanco sink overmounted over my new stone bench top as it will also help to prevent the stone edges from chipping around the sink, a problem you may encounter if you undermount the sink instead. It still looks great overmounted too. I imagine you could still use this sink with laminate bench tops if you overmount the sink because my plumber had put a stack load of silicone all along the perimeter of the flat edge of the sink where it sits on top of the bench top. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and my sink gets a real workout. My sink was costly (costs a lot more than standard sinks) but I’ve never regretted spending that money.

I installed an Oliveri Monet Double Bowl Undermount sink. It came with a timber cutting board and colander which fit in one side of the sink as well as a st/steel drainer tray (as shown in the photo). $ 795 @ Bunnings - special order. I have only ever used this brand in kitchen sinks as they wear well. I loved the shape of this sink as I used a square (undermount) in the laundry. Engineered stone bench top used in both areas.

re Karen: We've had laminate benches for 30 years, always with an undermount sink and have never had a problem. Laminate is a lot more affordable if you've got a tight budget.

I have a double SS sink with drainer. Both sinks are the same size and are a lot deeper than most. It's the best sink I've ever had over the last 45 years of owning several different homes, which all had different sinks. It was purchased on line - Zeon by Buildmat, the company is based in Vic. It was half the price of others at $339 plus around $50 for postage. It is made of high grade stainless steel, better than all the others I looked at. It can be used under mount or over mount.

We decided on overmount for kitchen as did not want chips in our stone around sink, nor mould underneath, sink is Oliveri. I cook alot, big pots, tray etc. Thought I would miss double sink but don't as use colander to wash/prep vegies. Laundry also overmount in stainless steel brand is Seima, very happy and reasonable price!

With undermounts there is always a risk of having mold if not sealed properly. Make sure you choose a good installer, ideally someone working with the exact brand.
