Period living room

really need some inspiration for my living room/guest room. It’s been like this for over a year as i really don’t know where to start! what To put either side of fireplace? What colour should the furniture be? Dark grey? Black? Or dark oak to match the sofa legs? Shutters or Roman blinds? Initially wanted to keep it neutral with different shades of grey but now thinking it needs a pop of colour. What do you all think?

Where is the entrance to the room? Is the first pic taken at door? I would try out the 2 sofas facing each other, sofas perpendicular to fireplace.

I would be very tempted to put a large/tall vase/plant pot in the corner with a living / artificial plant. Our living room is very grey and silver and it gives a homely feel and adds a bit of interest! Glass or silver furniture would also link well...

That paint colour is lovely - do you mind if I ask what it is?

I think i might remove the sofa in the bay and put in a window seat instead.

Turquoise or mustard, even both together work well with grey.

I too love the calmness of the room, so I think less is more. I'd go for a rug like this one

Has the grey, but the taupe and the turquoise add a little warmth. If you don't like that one, then something like these could work also
or for a more modern look, this one:-
mustard and grey on their own work well too
Your clock is beautiful, a large over mantle mirror would show it off even more:-
    coffee table in the middle??
For your windows i'd go with quality rough silk roman blinds with long dramatic curtains either side.

I also thought of glass/silver furniture but had a few comments that it would look too modern, but will now reconsider that option. Although I do feel slightly nervous about glass with two small children.

Chloe love the idea about a tall plant pot in the corner.

man about the house- I like your colour suggestions but have used them both already in another rooms! I’m keen to keep the sofas to maximise comfortable seating and also already have a window seat in the dining room.

I’ll attach some photos of the other rooms which are equally as bare!! Maybe you wonderful people could give me some inspiration for them

Also do you guys think the patterned fabric would work for blinds? My sister seems to think it’s too modern looking

It's a beautiful space. What exactly are you going to use the room for? When you say guest room do you mean occasional bedroom or formal sitting room? Will there be a TV? Will you use the fire? I would consider adding a mirror above the fireplace, matching sideboards either side of it with matching vase/plant/lamp etc to add interest and symmetry. Then a coffee table (I think the dark wood would work well) and curtains. I would also add some art to the wall.

I would agree with your sister re fabric

I personally would go for plain formal grey curtains in this room

Above is our main living room- also struggling with the detail for this room, soft furnishings etc. Is the room drowning in duck egg?

Lovely room. I like the fabric on the right for blinds. You could place a small sideboard, chest of drawers, co sole table on either side of the fireplace. Either matching mirrors above those and a painting on the mantle, or the other way around. Paintings on the sides (not matching though) and a mirror on the chimney breast.

Adding pattern would liven it up. I like the neutral colour scheme, but you could add a little bit of colour if you like. A touch of black always works well. And some cushions.

The grey room is lovely (as is the other!). I agree with the other comments, it just needs accessorising. I'd try pulling the sofa out of the bay and just pull the sofa opposite the fire away from the wall a few inches. Would you consider orange as an accent colour? I think the patterned material would work for a Roman blind, have you considered adding a pelmet ( but in a plain material not as shown in the pic!). I'd definitely add plants and flowers. The coffee and console tables are actually in wenge, a couple of piles of books would add warmth on the lower shelf with lamps on the console (Pooky have some nice shades). A soft throw draped over the arm of the sofa would also look great. I'd go for the same style mirror as the other room. You definitely need art but it's hard to choose art for someone as it's so personal. A floor lamp next to the sofa opposite the fire would also add some height

I don't think there's too much duck egg in the other room but I'd add an accent colour, I think coral would work well and flow with the orange. The coral cushion is also from Oka and I think the gold will lift the room. The weathered oak tray table is also from there which should work with your existing furniture. As with the other room I think it just needs accessorising with art, lamps, plant etc. A brass floor lamp would work in here

Add some pops of colour. Love the grey walls, but why not add jewel coloured sofas and a chandelier?

I'm seeing something like this for your formal living room:

Perhaps if you would like to maximise space and heat efficiency, an angled bay window radiator may work behind the sofa. There are many styles available that would be to be custom designed for the particular space including column or a standard double pane radiator like the one below we recently fabricated.

What a lovely space! I'd definitely pull the sofas away from the wall, and add some art and maybe cabinets either side of the fireplace to create symmetry. Add a nice rug & coffee table and I think that the room will feel much more 'put-together' and cosy. As far as pops of colour go, I'd keep it to the accessories - they are much easier and less expensive to replace if you change your mind 2 years later -cushions, vases, artwork etc are ideal for this.

    Some ideas below:

    Hope this helps!

P.s. If you are really wanting to change things up here's a picture I've been loving for ages - it would suit the style of your property.

Jen P- it’s a formal sitting room. I’ve seen the first picture you posted and loved the decor- very much what I was hoping for but am completely useless at executing.

minnie- really like all your suggestions. Especially the coral accent in the duck egg room- would never have thought to put those colours together but actually I think it’s exactly what that room needs.

carolina- thankyou so much for that drawing!! It’s awesome! Really helps to be able to visualise it all. I like the ottoman style coffee table- works well.

honeypoppet- that blue is lush! I wish I was that brave to chose such a bold colour. Do you think it would work as an accent colour?

so glad you all like the space, which is why I’m so desperate to do it justice. I just wish my interior design skills were a little better

Love the space and agree with many of the comments above - it lends itself to something dramatic and opulent like mirrored or black furniture. It may not be your thing but oriental style furniture would work perfectly. I'd probably stick with new, clean lined black lacquer rather than introduce antiques but there is plenty of choice - one of our ottomans, for example, would be great next to the fireplace and has the advantage of adding extra seating as well as storage.

From a lighting perspective you need some occasional lighting either side of the fireplace as you don't appear to have any wall lights. I would suggest something with a bit of texture and style - perhaps some crystal to link with your central pendant or a striking design piece. here are some of my suggestions:

I love your wall colour choice.

If it was me, I’d probably try and stick to furniture in glass and black/dark oak.

A piece of furniture on either side of the fire (I don’t think they need to look symmetrical), big, magestic mirror over the fire, and coffee table.

You could add colour with some nice pictures (personally I’d go for big, bold modern prints in dark frames) a plant on the coffee table, and some cushions (in colours to match your pictures).

It’s a very beautiful room. I don’t think it needs much.

So I thought I would update you all on the progress for this room. Its still not complete, but managing as much as I can with 2 small children!

I have taken all your suggestions on board. Just wanted some help re: coffee table. The one in the picture is my old coffee table and Im not keen on keeping it. I was thinking of an ottoman style table in the grey similar to sofas but dressed with a deep blue throw and pretty silver tray/accessories. What do you all think? I have attached photo of cushions to give you all an idea of colour. I will definitely be adding more blue at some point in the form of art and accessories.

It's looking great. It looks as if you're going for a transitional look? They're not cheap :( but I thought this art over each console table? (They are the same size!). I'd maybe look at an ottoman like this with a shelf for books. I can find a rectangular one but not the right colour ATM.. I probably wouldn't add any more grey though personally . It looks as if a tall palm could go to the left of the sofa in the bay?

Looks really good A J. I agree with Minnie, no more grey. :)

Yes, a bit of colour and 'life' (possibly in the form of a large plant, as suggested and maybe some fresh flowers) would complete the look methinks.

Have you pulled the sofas away from the walls a little?

Here are loads of footstools, similar to Minnie's suggestion too, and they can make made to measure ones too https://www.footstoolsandmore.co.uk/table-stool-footstools

Love the art that Minnie picked.

I wouldn't mind adding more grey. But you might go for blue?

Thank you so much for all your suggestions.

Minnie- I guess it is a transitional look! I had to google it to find out what that was. Ha!

ED- I will definitely be adding more colour into the room, just wanting to complete the main bit of furniture. I have moved the sofas forward a few inches as previously suggested and it definitely looks better.

Carolina- thankyou for the link to the website.

Hoping to complete the room over the next few months. Will update you all when it’s complete. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions
