Re-Upholstery Advice Needed!

Tegan Williams
6 år sedan

Hi, I have two armchairs (see below) which need recovering. I have been quoted for re-covering at about £630 each, which seems a bit steep. Does anyone have any advise on this? Any recommendations?

Thanks!!

I know it seems a lot but it doesn't sound higher costs than I would expect. I paid £450 for a smaller cocktail chair to be upholstered. That said, it has been beautifully done and looks gorgeous. I would just suggest that you make sure you really love the new fabric as it's an investment!

Not sure where you are located but I can definitely recommend a very good upholsterer in Derbyshire. He is very reasonable, I paid around £300 for a chair, price will depend on fabric.

I paid £350 for one very similar including fabric - so yes that seems very expensive!

If you have it traditionally done it will last another 100 yrs. Be careful it is comfy though. Get advice from upholsterer.

The cost of fabric can’t be judged or compared as it depends on choice.

Reupholstery is expensive because it is a very time consuming traditional skill. You get what you pay for and when done correctly it’s worth every penny.

Valid point Andrew. I'm afraid I don't know the itemised cost though.

Hi Tegan, I would ask for a breakdown in material and labour. That way you get a clearer picture. I would expect something like this to cost in the region of £250-£400 (depending on where you live) for the recovering, with fabric in addition, You’re looking at 6-7m of fabric per chair so if you know the cost you can then decide if you really love the fabric you’ve chosen or want to consider an alternative (cheaper). Many upholsterers will let you supply your own fabric. Finally check to see if the price is for “recovering” only or includes any potential remedial work (replacement of foam/wadding/springs/straps/repair of framework , etc). Hope this helps
