Need help with kitchen

I'm looking to add some color and personality to the fairly traditional kitchen in my new home. I'm trying to bring some of the blues from the semi connected (tri-level style split between kitchen and living room) living room in to the kitchen. I'm thinking of using blue colored pendants over the island as well as possibly a blue/brown combination of glass tile for a backsplash. Does anyone have any recommendations of the glass tile and/or the pendants? Do you think the room needs a colored accent wall? Should I abandon trying to tie the two rooms together and go a different route all together?

I like the idea of trying to tie the rooms together through color. Architectural Ceramics could be a great resource for you. We have several glass tile patterns and colors to choose from. Glass is a great option for a backsplash, because it's so easy to clean and care for. Depending on your timeframe, ACI has stock and special order options. Jonas--Given that your cabinets are light oak, your idea of an accent wall can work. I like the idea of pendant fixtures over the island, and the glass tile backsplash. Check out my page, as there are a couple of kitchens that will give you some ideas, in terms of color and pendant fixtures, that are similar in scope to yours. I would go darker on the window wall, and lighter on the long wall of the kitchen and family room. The 45 degree wall would be easier to define the color if the cabinetry stopped there. I would consider some sort of lattice between the top of the end upper cabinet and the sloped ceiling, which would make the color break more logical visually. Happy Houzzing.

Hej! I am Australian and live in Australia but have lived 7 years in Sweden. My written Swedish is rusty so I am going to write here in English in case you are interested in some more thoughts, although you have probably already written your article. I know more what lagom means than the average English speaker, but I certainly can't truly 'feel' it like a Swede who has grown up with it. For me it feels like how much Kalles I might put on my knackbrod, but I have lately started to try to think of it in terms of interiors and see if it works. The reason I am doing that is that I am currently working in the field of Professional Organising- helping people de-clutter, scale back, and organise. This process results in quite a makeover for a home and even life style and can be life changing. I personally LOVE minimalism and talk about it often but I find that the average person I meet is a bit cynical of minimalism and thinks it is too extreme. I have been reading a ton about minimalism and read some about hygge. I think what the average person is longing for is some minimalism+ some hygge. I think the current world (politics and fast pace of life , overdose of stuff, and overdose of info in our face all day on our screens, etc etc) feels a bit stressful for everyone these days. So, although the average person longs for simplicity, the word minimalism scares some people, and hygge is too cozy for some and so the concept and word LAGOM may be just the answer! The 'world' may start to borrow the word lagom from you Swedes now to fill a need for a word lacking in English that can fall between minimalism and cosy, that can feel relaxing, and which doesn't mean you have to get rid of as much as minimalism does. It may well gain a meaning outside of Sweden that is a different to inside Sweden I suppose. For example if the word became popular it could become a term for a 'style'. That would be pretty different to the meaning inside Sweden. I am actually planning to introduce the concept and word 'lagom' to my clients as way to encourage them to get rid of excess and have a calmer home, yet not be afraid as the goal does not have to be minimalism, it can be 'lagom' - just right, perfect, not too little, not too much. It sounds like a level or quantity they can choose themself as we go along. A bit like Marie Kondo's method; 'Choose to keep only what gives YOU joy and you will end up with just the right amount of stuff. It will be a result that fits YOU, not something you have to try to work to achieve, which I think Minimalism may feel to the average person. Shevaun Sandlund in West Australia.

My name is Andre Schievink and I run the design studio Amsterdam Living here in Stockholm. I have been working from my office for the last 12 years. With lots of fun and entousiasm. Now its time to move to a bigger location and share and combine our workspace with other creative designers/stylists/ artists/fashionistas and co interior designers. I am looking for a butik/ lokal on the groundfloor , in downtown Stockholm, with lots of windows and possibility for clients to walk in and see what we are doing or showing. Hej Mona, I hope its ok write in English. I have a few suggestions for you, that should make you feel more at balance and at home with your living room. The shelf above the sofa looks great! Also super nice decorated and not too cluttered (happens more often than not in my house) Instead of having many small plants, swap them for 2-3 bigger ones, placed on the floor. Just because you have a window sill doesn’t mean it needs to be filled, less is more. I love the warm colours, the rusty orange, greens and beige. I only find the white knitted blanket to be a harsh contrast. Maybe it can move to another room? Since your TV is mounted on the wall, I would add a slim shelf/ box shelf underneath (also hanging on the wall) – depending on the type of receiver you have, you can even hide it behind the tv – there are fixtures for that. Then I would remove the tv bench underneath, for a more spacious feel of the room. The cables I would put in a plastic rail/ tub, leading to the outlet. In terms of wall paint, Id go for a warm dark grey on the wall behind the sofa & tv. If you have any more questions feel free to ask Hope I helped a little! Have a great day!

Hi Bill! It's not possible to buy products on Houzz in Sweden yet, so if you're using the Swedish app/website that's why not all products have prices. The brands simply hasn't put that info on Houzz. So far the product section is only for inspiration and to help our users find the brands and retailers and go to their website to buy the products. Thanks to all of you! Secondly - would you suggest I remove the existing 4 inch laminate backsplash before installing the tile or should I just tile from the top of the existing backsplash to the bottom of the cabinets?

Ideally, I'd remove the 4" backsplash first, but only if you can do it without damaging the counter underneath. Otherwise your backsplash tile might not be wide enough to camouflage the lines left on the countertop.

It's definitely a cleaner look to remove the 4" backsplash before installing your tile. Removing it gives you more space to work with for your glass tile. Typically, without the 4" splash, you have 18" to work with from the top of the counter to the bottom of the upper cabinets. You'll also gain more space between the counter and the trim around the window. You can use a bigger tile under the window without the 4" splash, like a full 3x6 tile. Otherwise, keeping the splash may result in cut tile under the window. Or it limits you to a smaller mosaic to avoid cuts. Hope that helps!
