Mantel installation

We are constructing a built in Dimplex electric fireplace with Boral Pro-fit stacked stone. Stone depth ranges between 1/2 - 1-1/2 inches. Planning on a 6 ft mantel with corbels and arch. Is is better to install mantel before or after stone installation?

    Sorry for the delayed response. Not sure how this slipped through the cracks. Typically the mantel goes up first! Thanks
