Post vs Beam

You all chose to keep the structural post rather than replace it with a beam that would have made the room more open. It looks good, but I am in the process of making that decision in my kitchen remodel right now. We are removing the wall between the living room and kitchen. Besides cost, what should I be considering?

    I would always prefer to remove but the cost was prohibitive and it did not affect design or layout so the decision was made to leave it.
