For a family that loves hosting large gatherings, this expansive home is a dream; boasting two unique entertaining spaces, each expanding onto outdoor-living areas, that capture its magnificent views. The sheer size of the home allows for various ‘experiences’; from a rec room perfect for hosting game day and an eat-in wine room escape on the lower-level, to a calming 2-story family greatroom on the main. Floors are connected by freestanding stairs, framing a custom cascading-pendant light, backed by a stone accent wall, and facing a 3-story waterfall. A custom metal art installation, templated from a cherished tree on the property, both brings nature inside and showcases the immense vertical volume of the house. Photography: Paul Grdina

This Milford French country home’s 2,500 sq. ft. basement transformation is just as extraordinary as it is warm and inviting. The M.J. Whelan design team, along with our clients, left no details out. This luxury basement is a beautiful blend of modern and rustic materials. A unique tray ceiling with a hardwood inset defines the space of the full bar. Brookhaven maple custom cabinets with a dark bistro finish and Cambria quartz countertops were used along with state of the art appliances. A brick backsplash and vintage pendant lights with new LED Edison bulbs add beautiful drama. The entertainment area features a custom built-in entertainment center designed specifically to our client’s wishes. It houses a large flat screen TV, lots of storage, display shelves and speakers hidden by speaker fabric. LED accent lighting was strategically installed to highlight this beautiful space. The entertaining area is open to the billiards room, featuring a another beautiful brick accent wall with a direct vent fireplace. The old ugly steel columns were beautifully disguised with raised panel moldings and were used to create and define the different spaces, even a hallway. The exercise room and game space are open to each other and features glass all around to keep it open to the rest of the lower level. Another brick accent wall was used in the game area with hardwood flooring while the exercise room has rubber flooring. The design also includes a rear foyer coming in from the back yard with cubbies and a custom barn door to separate that entry. A playroom and a dining area were also included in this fabulous luxurious family retreat. Stunning Provenza engineered hardwood in a weathered wire brushed combined with textured Fabrica carpet was used throughout most of the basement floor which is heated hydronically. Tile was used in the entry and the new bathroom. The details are endless! Our client’s selections of beautiful furnishings complete this luxurious finished basement. Designed and built in conjunction with Freemont #2, this home pays homage to surrounding architecture, including that of St. James Lutheran Church. The home is comprised of stately, well-proportioned rooms; significant architectural detailing; appropriate spaces for today's active family; and sophisticated wiring to service any HD video, audio, lighting, HVAC and / or security needs. The focal point of the first floor is the sweeping curved staircase, ascending through all three floors of the home and topped with skylights. Surrounding this staircase on the main floor are the formal living and dining rooms, as well as the beautifully-detailed Butler's Pantry. A gourmet kitchen and great room, designed to receive considerable eastern light, is at the rear of the house, connected to the lower level family room by a rear staircase. Four bedrooms (two en-suite) make up the second floor, with a fifth bedroom on the third floor and a sixth bedroom in the lower level. A third floor recreation room is at the top of the staircase, adjacent to the 400SF roof deck. A connected, heated garage is accessible from the rear staircase of the home, as well as the rear yard and garage roof deck. This home went under contract after being on the MLS for one day. Thompson RemodelingThompson Remodeling
Thompson Remodeling really enjoyed working with this Grand Rapids family to remodel their basement into a family space where they could showcase their favorite sports memorabilia and other memories from their home state of Maryland. After remodeling their previous home just 6 months earlier, circumstances required the family to move. One day upon returning to their new home, they found their basement flooded! Realizing they needed to act fast to repair the damage they contacted Thompson Remodeling to help. When discussing the design for the project, our clients told us how much they had loved the updates they made to their last home and were hoping to use similar warm tones and rustic materials. We looked at photos of that home for inspiration and developed a design that would serve as an entertaining and gathering space that would allow their fantastic collection of Maryland sports memorabilia to shine. Careful consideration was given on how to use every nook and cranny of space, as was the selection process for specific rustic materials that would contribute warmth and visual interest. We used Ghost Wood to create a rich accent wall in the tv viewing area. The fireplace is made of stacked tile that looks like stone and the mantel is a handpicked, old barn beam. The clients told our designer that they wanted to hang a Maryland flag in the basement so she found this fantastic flag made of distressed wood which was hung above the mantel. For the flooring, we selected a gorgeous vinyl plank for easy cleaning and maintenance. An existing closet area was used to create a lighted, built-in display area to house the family's prized autographed Baltimore Colts footballs and Baltimore Orioles baseballs. The bar has a full-size refrigerator, microwave and sink. There are plenty of cabinets and drawers for everything they need for hosting parties on game days. The countertops are a very cool, silver-toned textured laminate. The rusted, recycled corrugated metal bar was hand selected by the client.

What was once an empty unfinished 2,400 sq. ft. basement is now a luxurious entertaining space. This newly renovated walkout basement features segmental arches that bring architecture and character. In the basement bar, the modern antique mirror tile backsplash runs countertop to ceiling. Two inch thick marble countertops give a strong presence. Beautiful dark Java Wood-Mode cabinets with a transitional style door finish off the bar area. New appliances such an ice maker, dishwasher, and a beverage refrigerator have been installed and add contemporary function. Unique pendant lights with crystal bulbs add to the bling that sets this bar apart. The entertainment experience is rounded out with the addition of a game area and a TV viewing area, complete with a direct vent fireplace. Mirrored French doors flank the fireplace opening into small closets. The dining area design is the embodiment of leisure and modern sophistication, as the engineered hickory hardwood carries through the finished basement and ties the look together. The basement exercise room is finished off with paneled wood plank walls and home gym horsemats for the flooring. The space will welcome guests and serve as a luxurious retreat for friends and family for years to come. Photos by Garland Photography

In the late 50’s, this basement was cut up into a dental office with tiny exam rooms. Red House Custom Building designed a space that could be used as a home gym & media room. Upon demolition, we uncovered an original, structural arch and a wonderful brick foundation that highlighted the home’s original detailing and substantial structure. These were reincorporated into the new design. The arched window on the left was stripped and restored to original working order. The fireplace was one of four original to the home. Harold T. Merriman was the original owner of home, and the homeowners found some of his works on the third floor of the house. He sketched a plat of lots surrounding the property in 1899. At the completion of the project, the homeowners had it framed, and it now hangs in the room above the A/V cabinet. High paneled wainscot in the basement perfectly mimics the late 1800’s, battered paneling found under several wall layers during demo. The LED accent lighting was installed behind the top cap of the wainscot to highlight the mixing of new and old while bringing a warm glow to the room. Photo by Grace Lentini.
