It is also naturally fire resistant. Ipe is dark brownish olive to dark olive in appearance, sometimes greenish due to lapachol. The grain of this hardwood is interlocked and the texture is classed as medium, luster is moderate or lacking depending on the species, the wood has a characteristic odor. Ipe is well known for its strength and is thought be the one of the hardest woods in the world (strength is three times harder than oak) and is highly resistant against fungi and termites and other pests.
