Studio Z Design The Banana Loft a 2 storey 3000sf brick warehouse building constructed in Toronto's East end in 1940s. Built by two brothers for banana import business, spanned the backyards of their adjacent homes. Our clients purchased building in a state of disrepair. design approach was to embrace building’s industrial past and combine many of original restored elements with modern touches. boasts a fluid connection to the outdoor environment. On ground floor, open/bright living space created by installing full height glass windows to take advantage of morning sunlight from east courtyard. A portion of existing concrete floor removed to create a sunken living room with 14-foot ceilings, new fireplace/feature display wall. kitchen, pantry, bathroom, 2 private home offices added to this floor. industrial steel members throughout /original steel doors to walk-in fridge sent to a car repair shop for refinishing. very small third floor removed to create much taller second floor w 3 bedrooms/ 2 bathrooms. 1000sf private rooftop terrace w green roof garden directly accessible from principal bedroom via oversized sliding door.
Triller Laneway House Modern Exterior, Toronto The potential of converting six laneway parking spaces at the back of the property into housing was apparent to architect Zuzanna Krykorka from the moment she laid eyes on the Parkdale, Toronto house her family ended up purchasing in 2018. Unique for a laneway house, the house has windows on all sides, bringing in lot of natural light while also interacting with the life of a city laneway.
Indian Road, Toronto roofline changed to a large gable with small dormers, typical of early 20th c homes; creates more useable space on third floor, better suits the house and the neighbourhood. change creates more southern exposure on roof – enabling the addition of solar panels.
