Svara på: When we moved into our house I was obsessive about the paint choices for every room, and I spent more than I care to admit on samples. Then I decided to repaint a few rooms, and I got help here at GW, but it was pretty overwhelming having so many people tell me their favorite color choices, not knowing anything about their styles, the light in their homes, etc. I made some good choices, but still spent tons on samples. When it came time to repaint the rest of the house a few years ago, I decided to use a color consultant. I used Amy Woolf, who was a frequent GW poster at the time. Best use of time and money ever. I don't think I spent much more on her services than I did on all the samples the last times around, and the choices I ended up with were so much more cohesive, better, and very personalized. Since you are planning to do your whole home, it's something to think about.

I go through a place in NYC called M.Katz and Sons (www.katzfurniture.com). They always have the best prices. For my last purchase (an American Drew dining room set) they beat the N.Carolina prices by a lot. I think it is egregious that furniture stores charge in comparison to M.Katz or the N.Carolina places....unbelievable! Which N.Carolina place did you go through. I would definitely price it out through the same one as well....thanks! Jill

Svara på: They certainly didn't seal the drainage plane fabric properly. Hydraulic pressure below grade can get extremely intense, so always use "Hydraulic Cement" when sealing penetrations in a basement wall below grade.

Svara på: Your grout lines on a kitchen floor need sanded, or microfine sanded. Unsanded will not have enough body and will shrink and come out. Best of both worlds would be something like Mapei Flexcolor CQ in Biscuit. It’s acrylic based, with microfiber got body. Will not need sealing.

Svara på: I have a layout for your room using your existing furnishings. It might not be ideal because of the walk way, but your loveseat will fit between your windows and the combination of all the seating around the fireplace will really be much better for conversation. This is an easy layout to try in this room and see if you like it. I have placed your curio cabinet and the antique children's chairs at the back area of the room. I assume you don't expect anyone to sit in the chairs and the light at the back of the room is better for viewing the objects in a cabinet. This is not a Craftsman Tri Level. You have a contemporary Tri Level home and your traditional furnishings are a bit at odds with the architecture, but I suspect you might already know this. Please take down the Scarf Valances. They visually lower the grand space of your room and the 80's want them back. This could be a stunning, dynamic space with the rock faced fireplace & ceiling beams, but you have put the brakes on doing anything to help it and only you can know why that is. Personally, I would not spend the funds to raise the floor. Just install the wood floor. If you raise the floor the windows might be to short and if the windows are within 18" of the floor that have to be replaced with tempered glass. Too much money for not enough effect. You could take some baby steps by keeping the sofa and loveseat and replacing the wing back gold chairs with chairs less traditional. A chair with a curved back.

Svara på: In my neck of the woods, believe it or not, the lumber at Home Depot was considerably better than the lumber I could get at our local lumber yard. When it comes to nuts and bolts, tools, concrete mix, drywall, insulation, caulking, etc., their stock is just as good as anyone else's. I also bought towel bars, tile, and other finish items there too. It you want anything fancy and expensive, they can order it for you. One thing I would stay away from is their paint. The Behr paint is pretty low quality. I joke that I built the Home Depot house because while building my house, I bet I was at Home Depot daily. Everyone there knows me by name LOL. If you are going to purchase anything over $1,500, sign up at the pro desk and you will get significant discounts. Make sure you ask any of the salespeople to send your purchase to the "Bid Desk." I received at least a 15% discount on items and up to 40% on some things like my windows and some flooring.
